Trying to Identify Old Railroad Locks?

Postby Maliphus7 » 4 Oct 2015 4:17

First off Thank you for taking the time to look at these for me and any help is appreciated i noticed some other people asking "what are these" etc questions here so i figure ill give it a try.

My questions are if you can please tell me 1 if you know what the lock/locks are, 2 how rare they are, 3 should i bother to restore them in your opinion.

Restore? They are already beautiful.
Don't ruin them, leave them untouched.

Cheers :)

Agreed, removing the patina will diminish the value. The first two are railroad padlocks, the third is a very large corbin padlock, the keys in the 4th pic are Scandinavian padlock keys, the fifth padlock is an eagle six lever padlock, the 6th+7th are Scandinavian padlocks that look to be made by star lock works. Your union pacific lock is worth around $103.50. Your Adlake railroad lock is worth around $10.81. Your large corbin is worth around $100(rough estimate) The keys are hard to say, maybe 10 bux (rough). Your scandi padlocks are probably worth around 20 bux (rough). The eagle six lever is worth around $43.55.

Actually Adlake still makes a railroad lock, they do look different from your older version
Do you have keys for them? It can be fairly easy and rewarding to make a key

Far as restoration goes, they will be worth less money if you do anything to damage the patina

Wow yes i chose not to do anything before consulting some more knowledgeable people and i really appreciate you guys taking the time to answer my questions and explain that to me!

My Uncle passed away he worked for the City Department mainly as a road grader operator and im sure while building Roads and such he found these around old railroad tracks etc and held onto them and im sure my cousin will be extremely happy to have this information as they hold some sentimental value to him also.

Sometimes at antique shows/stores, I'll see brand spankin new adlake padlocks that the vendors want a fortune for, because they think it's old and a pristine mint condition piece or something like that.
