What Lock to Purchase

Postby NoOneWithThatName » 11 Oct 2015 12:32

Hello. Newbie. Not a lock picker.

Hopefully. Someone can help answer a question.

I believe I have an unusual situation.

I own a piece of property... not large (1 acre).

The woods are dense enough to where someone can hide in it and not be seen.

The wood are not monitored. You could pretty stand there for days and not be seen.

I had a property / boundary issue that I took to court and won.

Of course... for every winner - there is at least one loser.

I had a professional metal fence and an access gate installed at the rear of the property... in the wood line.

There are people who have taken offense to my winning the legal case - as well as the existence of the fence and myself.

I installed a $200 lock and chain device to block access to the gate.

I don't remember the brand... but it was recommended by a professional locksmith.

I spoke with the manufacturer and was told - "no one will get past this lock".

The lock was installed for a week before the undesirables made an attempt...

and successfully cut the lock with a bolt cutter within 10 minutes.

I know this... because I saw them pass on my security cameras.

However, the image was not clear enough... so I have gone ahead installed a new higher resolution camera system.

The images produced on this surveillance system is more than acceptable. Even at night with no moon light.

Currently, there is no video coverage on the fence. But this too will change very soon.

Climbing over or cutting the fence is not the issue I face. That's easy for someone to do.

The undesirables don't care about going through or over the fence.

As you've probably already determined - It's simply... the fence (and me). A their need to prove a point...

which is "f#ck you. you can't stop us."

Question is. How do I stop them.

The cameras will work... but am still looking for a lock that cannot be broken.

As with most people... Cost is always an issue - but it's an issue I can somewhat overlook in order to solve the lock issue.

I have looked solutions from $40 to $150 bike / motorcycle U-Locks... made by Kryptonite. Not sure if this is the solution.

Much appreciation for taking the time to read this and for any replies I may receive.

Hello,
Do you have the lock and chain that they cut? I would say that u-locks wouldn't be a good choice. Do you think that bolt cutters will be the only attempt made? With your price range there are many padlocks that would do the job. I'll provide some ideas, but generally shrouded ones are better. You'll also need a good hardened chain to go with it.

depending on the setup you are going to want something like this hasp https://securitysnobs.com/Abloy-Heavy-D ... -Hasp.html
with a lock like this https://securitysnobs.com/Abloy-Protec2 ... dlock.html

if the shackle is not exposed it cant be cut ;)

but I think getting your camera setup fixed should be a higher priority. with evidence you dont need a high security locks, a cheap lock being cut shows intent and is enough to prosecute for trespassing or worse.

I would be talking to a local Security Specialist or cop about what's happening and see what they recommend.

Sounds like its descended into a pissing competition... they want in, you wanna keep them out. I think Blue is right, focus on the camera system for collecting evidence rather than spending more money on bigger locking systems. It doesnt matter if they cut off a $20 lock or $300 of lock and Hasp, its still criminal damage and thats the best way to stop them while keeping your own costs to a minimum.

That PL462 is an absolute beast of a lock. That said, keep in mind that they may throw glue or other such material into the lock if they can't get in. A Teflon-based lubricant may help prevent the glue from sticking.

You may also consider getting a used S&G 833 lock off eBay.

Be aware that the part attacked (if the people have any brains) will be the weakest part. When the lock and chain get too strong to cut, they may remove the hinge or hook up a chain to their vehicle and pull down the gate entirely.

The better camera will be good if you can catch them in video, since you can have them arrested for trespassing, destruction of private property, and you can have them legally ordered to pay for repairs for damage caused.

Good luck,

Gordon

That's a nice hasp for sure, but it might be difficult to put on a fence.

That's true, but vandals may be hard to catch.

I might also suggest a license plate specific camera in this location. I helped a trucking company who had people tearing down their gates and stealing there trailers put one up on a pole specifically for capturing plates. I am not sure what technology you are using so its hard to make a camera recommendation but read your reviews before purchase because the cameras are either really good or really bad, there is no in between with these.
If you have 2 cameras one for capturing action and one for getting plates you should be able to gather enough evidence to put a stop to it.
Im not sure of your layout but if you have a road or driveway place the license plate camera up or down the road away from the gate. They may get a wild hair and shoot down any camera they see the IR for at the scene. This way you can gather a timeline and hand the authorities a case with a bow on it.

I agree with the others on the gate because I have seen this too many times and they will just tear down the fence. Best luck on this because these types of wars are always bitter.

IF I were to trespass because I was pissy at my neighbour over something, wouldn't it be easier to just ruin the fence by cutting etc then trying to bust through a gate?. No point in a gate with a massive secure lock if the rest of the fence is simple chain-link that could be cut almost with a normal wirecutter?. But again if your fence is not chain-link then this might not be an issue?

You might consider the Meroni Luccotto Padlock. It is vitally different from anything else you'll see. It looks like a dumbell and uses an ace key to operate. The stainless steel padlock is locked with ball bearings and spins when trying to cut with a hack saw.

It is small enough to thwart typical bolt cutter attacks.

It sells for less than $US100.

PM me for details

PS. If you need chain, i suggest looking into Herc Alloy (used for anchors on naval boats)

Everyone brings extremely good suggestions to the table. I do agree with most of what is said and want to add:

Putting a cheap $20 lock will surely have them cut it again but as said before, you should have a good camera to catch them. Hoping they dont cover their face. Its sort of a set up because they will see this lock and think to cut it again. They may be smart the first few times but sooner or later they will forget a face mask or something and that is when you grab the situation.

If you plan to buy a new $200-300 lock each time its cut will kill your budget but playing the odds with a $5-10 locks seems like a better options. Remember, again as said before, if they cant cut it, they will cut the gate just because they are pissed you put a lock they cant cut.

If you do decided to put a lock, I think S&G enviromental would be a great choice for many reasons but one being the glue attach but make sure you have a hasp on so the lock cant be picked up letting the glue drip all the way inside the lock. With the hasp and this lock, if they do try to use glue, it will at worst seize the first disc but with some Brakleen (brake cleaner) that glue will soften up allowing you to use your key to open. you also dont want to get stuck with a top of the line anti-cut lock that has been glued because then you yourself will need to cut it some how or pay someone to cut/open it.

From what I find, glue is the most popular attach because its so easy, fast and glue is readily available and its probably the attach that everyone knows about.

You might also consider putting an alarm on the gate.

My final thought is to stay strong. I say this because your battle may wage for a very long time. Speak with your local cops and become friendly with the local locksmiths.
