tensioning top of the keyway left handed.

Postby Jonas E » 19 Oct 2015 14:02

Hi. I'm new to the forum and I'm having problems tensioning top of the keyway. I pick with my left hand and hold the padlock in my right.

so what I want to know is, are there anyone that have a god tip for me? Pulling the tension wrench with my pointer finger is awkward, do I just have to get used to it? Maby some of you left handed pros can post a pic of how you do it?

Sorry for the bad English.

Kind regards

Jonas E.

Hello, and welcome :)
Pics of your tension wrench would be helpful. It doesn't sound like you have peterson pry bar type wrenches. Are you using a bottom of the keyway tension wrench in the top of the keyway? You could try picking in a vise, it usually makes tensioning easier. I don't like bok wrenches in the top, because they usually fall out. :x

I'm not left handed but the peterson pry bars are great, I also like the hpc tr-4. You can make a good one for yourself with a piece
of metal clothes hanger bent into an 'L' shape. Pound the tip of the smaller part of the 'L' with a hammer until it flattens out & adjust with a file or grinder

I like the tip with holding it upside down but I was kinda trying to see if any one had I tip of holding it the other way. Anyway here are some pics of my top of the keyway tension tools. I also added some pics of som locks I got the other day and my homemade pickhandles.

If the lock only opens clockwise, the only thing I can see to do is to hold it in a clamp/vise, or try bottom of the keyway and use your thumb. Or you could work on becoming ambidextrous. :)

It was a joke, because you said vice which is a bad or evil habit, instead of vise which is what you hold things with.
