Question regarding a Schlage B series deadbolt

Postby m1ttens » 20 Oct 2015 11:21

I've been SPPing for a few years now thanks to this site. Joined recently to ask a question about bumping since one of my buddies in the department was all about it. I've decided bumping isn't worth my time or effort. Now on to my question:

I got a new batch of locks in the other day from the local locksmith and was having no problems with Kwikset, Defiant, and Schlage until I ran into a weird Schlage B series deadbolt. First, it's dirty as hell so I had a hell of a time picking but eventually I SPP'd it into the "open" position but it would not rotate further than 90 degrees. I have one of those DIY practice stands that ITS Tactical made so I insert the whole bolt into it, and it was set up for the bolt going in to the (imaginary) door jamb to the right which means I should have had to turn it counterclockwise to get it open. The keyway turned freely but I was unable to retract the bolt into the stand, so I clumsily tried to use my plug spinner on it and didn't put enough tension in it so the pins got caught and it reset itself. Any reason why this would happen? Broken lock? I'll try and pick again when I have more time but wanted to get some opinions on this. Thanks.

Edit:

To add, my buddy tried using his bump key to get more leverage/turning torque but it didn't insert all the way into the keyway like it normally would on other Schlage locks. It appears to be a 5 pin Schlage so it's really a mystery.

Is it possible there is a broken key or other debris in the keyway?

I was able to feel all 5 pins when I inserted the pick into the key way. I shouldn't be able to turn the plug if there's something obstructing, no?

Ahh, was reading on my phone earlier. If the plug turns, but the bolt does not retract, then I'd check the tailpiece next.

It sounds to me like the deadbolt and tailpiece are out-of-phase/timing with each other.

They are meant to go together in a certain orientation, especially with lazy tailpieces which are not rigidly attached to the cylinder in a fixed position.

Then there were some older deadbolts which liked to have the rest of the lock installed with the bolt extended.

If your deadbolt is not retracting fully because the key will only rotate so far and then it stops, it is one or both of the issues above.

Here is the deadbolt in question- turns 180 degrees CCW with the key inserted.

Here it is after I have picked it but it will not go any further than this point. I've already broken a wrench over trying to best this.

I know I should just take it off and fix it, but I'd also like to know what to do if one encountered this in the "real world"? Thanks.

Try grinding down an old schlage key to just under 9 depth. Insert and use as a plug turner. Saves on the tension wrenches! 8)

Ok, now that you have better explained the problem:

You need something which will allow you to apply more torque to the plug than a tensioning tool is designed to do.

Use a small straight bladed screwdriver.

This looks like its a turning force problem not anything to do with the lock.
