Papa Gleb's Lock Impressioning

I have been fascinated by impressioning so naturally I had to give it a try. With several failed attempts, I realized I needed to set myself up for success if I wanted to learn this skill so I made a blank holder and bought a swiss 4 cut file. That was about 6 a year ago and I have been enjoying this skill ever since. Here is a pic of the blank holder I made with the 3rd ever key I impressioned (I have since purchased a commercial holder) and a key I impressioned last night. You can notice how the cuts have improved over the time/practice.

This USN Yale is actually mine. I mention that because out of all the locks I impressioned, 80% of them are Jeff Moss' locks lol so its nice to work on a lock that is actually mine haha

Nice job on those keys. Please reduce the picture size to 800x600 so we can actually see them.

Are the keys held in your homemade handle by two screws? I mean, you cut, drilled and threaded the screwdriver shaft on only one side? Or you need to drill another hole in every blank? Hope my question makes sense.

Cheers :)

Yea Ill get used to posting pics here just give me a few. I thought they would come out as links but I think I need to go read that pic posting thread again.

Yea I know that Moss takes up all my free times. That guy, one of these days one of these days :D

Yes you are right. I drilled and tapped only the 2 holes on one side of the tool. I started its life as a screw drivers but after the tip broke, I realized I can use it because it had a nice sold shaft. So I cut a slit with a hacksaw then widened it with my dremel then file. It works great but If I would do this again, I would pick something with a thicker shaft and use bigger set screws. This tool is a 2-in-1 because it also acts as an IC tail piece turner. I have since upgraded to a commercial tool which I enjoy much more.

on Imgur you actually have a big Edit button that allows you to resize the images within Imgur.

I'll check in later or PM me if you want me to edit your original post and drop in the resized images.

And for whatever reason I have found that one cannot edit the topic post, but if you reply then you can edit it. Anyone verify?

I believe that you can only edit your post for about 30 minutes after posting it, so if you reply that is considered a new post and you can edit it for a while.

This beauty comes to us from Potti (aka Michael) in Germany. Its a Lince 5 pin padlock made in spain. Very nice and clean padlock but a very detailed logo. The padlock, although clean, has lots of on the keyway and Im not sure if they use weak springs or if its the ware. Potti sent me this padlock w. 1 blank which isnt a problem until I realized its a steel blank. In an effort to save my baby, my file, I went on a hunt and thanks to the brave efforts of Jeff (The Lock Butcher) and Jeff (Moss), I was able to get the next best thing which was a corbin blank. We lots of modding I preped the blank and went to work. Having previously decoded the bitting I know where to go easy and where to file more. I really went slow on this one for several reason, but mainly no wanting to snap this thin blank which took about 20m to make and cause more ware to the lock. Snapping a blank isnt a really big deal however almost always if it snaps in the lock you have 2 problem. 1 you need to extract the key and 2 if it snapped chances are it will leave a sharp part on the bow which will scratch the padlock at the instance it snaps.

I recently started using a decoder card to file down to the next pin depth. I am very pleased, so far. I break much fewer keys, and progress through a key much faster.
Anyone else use similar techniques?

Still have to give an ultra-violet marker a try...
