File Cabinet Lock Help Requested Please!

Postby NotHoudini » 28 Oct 2015 13:13

Hello Everyone,

Can anyone help me identify the manufacturer of the file cabinet in the pictures shown via the following link, please?

http://s743.photobucket.com/user/mypbun ... t=3&page=1

If it helps, the numbers on the lock mechanism itself are '0101'. Also, the lock itself pushes in a bit as well. It pops back out automatically. The file cabinet itself is very solid. It's grey in color and 28.5" deep.

I'm trying to access the file cabinet because I don't have the key (it wasn't provided when I was given this cabinet), and it somehow locked-up on me. I'd rather first try to identify the manufacturer and get a new key first. I'm open to trying to 'pick' the lock as well, but I know next to nothing about going about it this way. Any and all help in identifying the manufacturer or picking the 'lock' on this cabinet would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

All My Best,
~NotHoudini

Hello NotHoudini:

Welcome to LP101.

You have there an older file cabinet with a plunger style lock.

I disagree with you about the code number, it looks more like D101

The lock cylinder is clearly a recent replacement and not the original lock to the cabinet.

The simple way to obtain a key for this is to either bring the cabinet to a locksmith or call a locksmith to come out and service it for you. Since the lock is a generic looking replacement it could have several bitting codes corresponding to the D101 identity.

Good luck.
