What type of lock is this?

Postby Taibe » 28 Oct 2015 10:45

Hi All,

Please can anyone help identify what type of lock this is?

http://imgur.com/a/kv5MJ

A family member has lost their key with some documents that had our address on it. Lucky the lock is a cylinder, so easy to change out, but I'm not sure what type it is.

It's like a rim lock but instead of 2 screws, it has a clip/pin that slides in from the side of the door through the lockset.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hello, and welcome! :)
I'm not positive, but I think this would still be called a rim cylinder. I assume you want to know what key blank it takes. I've never heard of that brand, and couldn't get anything on google. It's probably a rebranded lock made by some larger company. It doesn't look cheap enough to be Chinese but I may be wrong. If I had to guess, I'd say it looks like an ilco 1171 blank. Where are you from? That might help.
Best of luck,

Thanks kwoswalt99.

The brand is Cowdroy, it's an Australian company. Tried the Internet, but nothing. I'm based in HK if that helps.

Yeap, it's like a Rim cylinder but without the screws. It has a clip which passes through the side of the door in the lockset, which holds the cylinder in place via the notch on the top.

It's slightly longer than your regular rim cylinder.

I have tried a couple of local locksmiths, but no luck.

So have the locksmiths replace the entire lockset if you can not locate another cylinder for it.

Perhaps contacting the manufacturer could get you a replacement cylinder: http://www.cowdroy.com.au/home

That cylinder looks pretty simple. Have you tried taking it directly to a local locksmith who can change the pins and make new keys? It seems hard to believe the two locksmiths you took it to could do nothing.

Thanks for all the advice.

@Evan - I'm not sure but all the door furniture is a set, and to my noobie eyes the lockset looks like a set. I'm renting, so not happy to pay $250 for a $30 job.

@Squelchtone - good idea, will send and see what their reply is.

@Raymond - Only asked them if they got a replacement, totally didn't occur to me that I could have it repinned. Will try again after work today.

Thanks for all your help.

At a glance it looks to be a Kwikset or a Weiser keyway. :|

A Kwikset might fit, but Weisers are too thick.
