I had the opposite problem with a S&G that was missing a screw. The metric 5, that is the standard on this side of the pond, was smooth for the first two turns. Then becomes hard to turn. I didn't force it and ordered some 8-32 from the UK. Those were perfect.
Is it possible that somebody used the wrong screws in your lock and ruined the thread? Or maybe the screws are the correct ones but the thread is somewhat stripped and make the correct new screws feel wrong?
If you have the old screws, push one against a new one to see if the threads fit each other without gaps. You rotate one and push the threaded tips against each other.
There's a tool to measure the thread. Every hardware store that sells tap and die tools should have one.
