What size screw is it on Yale 0402?

Now that I have this old lock working, I want to replace the 2 slotted flat head machine screws holding the backplate onto the lock as they were very tight in there and the heads are slightly deformed now. I am afraid they may not be able to be removed again. Haven't been able to find the exact screw locally. It is very close to 5x0.8 but not quite perfect. It is not 12-24 or 10-32. I am suspecting it is a British metric. Anyone know what the correct size is, and where I might be able to get some?

I had the opposite problem with a S&G that was missing a screw. The metric 5, that is the standard on this side of the pond, was smooth for the first two turns. Then becomes hard to turn. I didn't force it and ordered some 8-32 from the UK. Those were perfect.

Is it possible that somebody used the wrong screws in your lock and ruined the thread? Or maybe the screws are the correct ones but the thread is somewhat stripped and make the correct new screws feel wrong?

If you have the old screws, push one against a new one to see if the threads fit each other without gaps. You rotate one and push the threaded tips against each other.

There's a tool to measure the thread. Every hardware store that sells tap and die tools should have one.

Actually I just get my tap wrench out and make it whatever thread I have screws for. Takes a minute...

The screws for these yale's are hard to find. Not the thread size, but they are bevel headed macine screws with a domed top. I occaisonally need these for gunsmithing as well, but I don't think they make them anymore.

If You are talking about an Oval-headed screw they are available at every Ace hardware and many other hardware stores

The flat head machine screw ones aren't easy to find. The ones at the store are either phillips machine screw, or flat headed wood screw. I get the ones I need online.

The big box home improvement stores in my area all have nifty little screw displays that have all the common SAE and metric nuts along with the corresponding screws all mounted on a board, so I brought the screws from my Yale to see what size they are. They are flat head slotted, not oval head. They're easy enough to find here, it's just the diameter and pitch I'm having trouble with. As I mentioned before, the screws go almost all the way in on the 5x0.8 nut, but still not quite the right nut. Nothing else is even close. Yes, I have a set of taps I can make it any size I want, but I would prefer to get the correct hardware.

I get frustrated too, especially when you have what is, in my neighborhood such an easy problem to fix,
Yet how could I ever afford all the part costs & shipping of replacement parts & tools?
