Hello, a friend recently showed me how if you have a pair of handcuffs that are double locked, you can hit them on a hard surface and knock the little bar back into place, and un-double-lock them. Has anyone ever successfully done this while wearing the handcuffs? I can never do it without hurting my wrists.
Ray from Germany did a good talk about this at HOPE in NYC. I'm not sure if this is the correct talk discussing the hitting on ground thing, but I know he's discussed it at HOPE before, there should be more of these videos kicking around youtube. He suggested the edge of a concrete stairs or a metal hand rail, and yes it will hurt, and yes I've done it as a test, but if it were real life and you *needed* to get out of cuffs and escape, a bruised wrist is probably worth it. Would I do it to show off to my friends or in front of an audience at a locksport village, probably not more than one time.
I got to hang out with him at several conferences so far, he let me pick his BOA/Peerless Medeco cuffs, which was a lot of fun!
If you are properly cuffed, getting yourself out of handcuffs will always hurt. Even if you have a key. If they're double locked, it'll hurt even more. In some cases it can even result in nerve damage. When most people fool around with escaping from cuffs they are generally not cuffed correctly.

I was trained to apply cuffs with subject's hands behind the back, palms facing out, keyholes facing up. I defy anyone to slam cuffs on the ground hard enough to disengage the double lock while in this position. If you do manage though, good luck picking the cuffs afterward with those broken bones in your wrists .
Joking aside, as MBI touched on, handcuffs can cause injury if deployed even somewhat improperly. Use caution experimenting with them on yourself or others.

That is how I was taught to "apply the bracelets", too. Have had fun when people want to show off how they can get out of cuffs, only to have them installed correctly. Then they say "No, you have to put them on differently".

Just when you finally think you have learned it all, that is when you learn that you don't know anything yet.
When I was in high school I went to a police program for youth who were considering going into the academy. I was taught how to properly put on cuffs, and no one could pay me any amount of money to possibly do irreparable damage to myself by banging my hands against a rail. I give props to people that are willing to try it though. You are a much more courageous person than I am.

Having just tried with several sets that i own, I can say that there's no reasonable amount of force that would disengage any of the bars on the cuffs I have (Peerless, S&W, ASP, Schrade). Smacking them against carpet over concrete so they dont scratch. I can imagine its possible, but I wouldn't even dream of trying. Nor would I advise anyone to.
