Just made a key,will it work?

I want to get into lock picking and thought to first try making a key as it was extremely easy for me to do so because I have access to tons of tools and scrap.So I just picked up a key colored it with a sketch pen and pressed it on paper then from that paper I made my first key,I have attached both the original and duplicate of the keys and want to verify that it would work before I drive all the way home to see that it doesn't (I am in a workshop about an hour's drive from my home).My biggest concern is what I originally forgot about,I don't know the technical term for this,it is the part of the shaft that sticks out after the bit.But if that is really necessary I could tig weld a piece of metal there.Please do be quick on the replies.

I'm not an expert on lever locks so I'll let someone else chime in on your key, but I'll offer a tip about forums in general.

You're asking for free help from strangers. Asking them to hurry up in solving your problems is more likely to bring annoyance than speed.

The bit at the tip holds the key straight in the lock. Otherwise it can rock which effects the lift height you achieve on the levers. It may still work with trial and error without it.

... Surely they don't put keyways on the INside of jail cell doors?

As for the key, it just seems to keep the bitting at the right height (and angle, as Zeke said) to connect properly with the levers. When you insert it into the lock, push it in until it hits the back and then withdraw it approx. what you'd imagine the distance between the tip part and the start of the key bitting is. Then just move it up/down, jiggle it around a bit and it should work fine I'd imagine. But if you want to use it as a permanent replacement I can imagine that would get annoying real fast.
