are petersons worth the money.

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

I'm considering getting some Petersons sent over, but two things concern me. As these are obviously expensive (but high quality) picks and *puts on mobster voice* it'd be a shame if anything happened to them...

Firstly, on Peterson's site, at the bottom of the order page it specifies:

Warning: In accordance with 39 USC Section 3002a, this site is solely for the use of Security Professionals. Only the following are permitted to purchase items from this site: BONA FIDE LOCK MANUFACTURERS OR, DISTRIBUTORS, LOCKSMITHS, REPOSSESORS, OR MOTOR VEHICLE MANUFACTURERS OR DEALERS.

By ordering from this site, purchasers swear, attest and represent under penalty of perjury, that they are active authorized professionals in one or more of the above approved professions, and further attest and represent that they are authorized to receive products from this site through the US Mail.

We actively scrutinize purchases made from this site to ensure strict legal compliance with these requirements, and reserve the right to refuse shipment of any order that we do not believe to be lawful or appropriate.

Does anyone know if this is just to cover their backs? Or are they legitimately screening and denying sales from private individuals? What about International sales, as the laws are different in different countries (it's not illegal for individuals to own and use picks here in the UK). Has anyone ordered directly from them (who are not licensed locksmiths) who can attest to them shipping?

Secondly, I'm based in the UK and obviously Peterson is in the US. Does anyone know if there are any problems bringing picks in through customs? It's legal to own picks here but carrying them outside your house can be classed as "going equipped" or something like that, where the police have to have a reasonable suspicion that you were going to use the picks for a crime. However I wonder if customs might not take too kindly to a big package of lock picks coming through? Don't want to find myself getting questioned over that, I'm guessing "it's a hobby" wouldn't cut it as a defence either. And I do vaguely recall a thread on some forum that I found a few months back where someone in the Uk said that customs questioned him over lock picks coming in...

Obviously I'm not expecting proper legal advice or anything, just your own thoughts and experiences A) ordering from Peterson as an individual and B) Ordering picks from abroad (for people based in the UK).

Thanks!

It is legal to cover their backsides. Go ahead and order, as long it is legal to have them where you are.

Good to know :). If and when I get them I'll post in my lock picks pics thread if anyone else is on the fence and is interested in a "review". Assuming I don't get hauled in by customs, lol!

I order from them directly all the time and have never had a problem. Obviously I cannot attest to their international deliveries.

I have an order in with them now and there were no problems or "questions" placing an order, in fact I had communications with Ken over a deal code mix-up and he is very friendly and helpful. As to whether the picks get safely through customs and into my hands.. Well, we'll see about that - I'm still waiting (It's been marked as "departed" from the originating airport for a few days now, probably stuck in customs on our end).

If and when they come through I'll be doing a review and will also note if I had any issues with customs, e.g. opened packages etc. But at least on the ordering side of things, it's not a problem. As GWiens2001 said, probably ass-covering.

What 0.018 or 0.015 are you talking about here? You can just send me a PM if you want :) Really intrested in this!

Sounds like the thickness of the picks, I like the .018, they can take more abuse
