Ideas for first kit!?

Postby dablo » 6 Dec 2015 18:50

Im about to buy my first kit here and Im not gonna buy a big kit as I think its waste of money. I live in Sweden and Im about to start this hobby up. So Im thinking about this one for now. Seems like Peterson is a good choice and quality:

https://www.lockpickshop.com/JP-SS.html

Any other recomendations? or should that do it? I allready have a Prybar Lite 0.040 size and other tension tools.

Thanks in advance!

I think it would make a fine first kit.

My first set was a small set of SouthOrd 2010 (Euro style) and a 24pc GOSO set. They work fine, but the SouthOrds, which effective, are uncomfortable to hold and the GOSO handles are poorly engineered, scratchy and also uncomfortable. I know that as a beginner you don't want to spend a fortune only to find out that it's not for you, but I think also buying super cheap sets is a great way for people to get finger pain and decide it's not worth the hassle. A small selection of vital pieces from a high quality manufacturer - and I know Peterson has a great reputation - seems like the smart choice :).

Nice thing about many of the things found at banggood is that the quality is good. You should try a Klom pick before you
denigrate it. I see the same picks selling for twice as much, or more at my distributors. Same things about other korean-made
products, for example they have been copying many gun magazines & their quality is usually very good to excellent. I hear
korea outfitted their specialists with Glock handguns & to save money they copied the magazines--then started selling them

I'm happy to put my money where my mouth is :).

Just picked up This 18pc Klom set from BangGood for £10.02 - impressive price I have to say, free shipping and all. I'll update here with my thoughts when they arrive... In 7-25 business days :P

I think you made a mistake, do you really need a pickset with 12 hooks?

The Peterson Just Picks is a great set bill. I'm not sure why you're so hot for banggood since you discovered that site, but I think you're doing a dis-service telling someone to go get lock pick tools at bang good if what they want is a set of nice Peterson picks. Not everyone is cheap, frugal, or broke.

I own a Klom automotive kit by the way so I'm not poo-poo-ing them entirely, and I like banggood for drone stuff and electronic gadgets, but it pains me when someone getting into the hobby only wants to spend $5.99 on a pick set and then comes back wondering why they can't open anything or because the picks dont fit into their locks (mainly a gripe I have with thick GOSO picks)

It's also hard to tell someone, ok, grab your S rake and insert it into the lock in such and such way, when their pick set is a bunch of weird looking hooks of different angles and sizes. This is why I'm a big advocate of new pickers buying a traditional basic set from Southord, Southern Specialties, Sparrow, Majestic, HPC, or Peterson.

I don't need the set at all - the reason why I picked that specific set is that, for a search on banggood of Klom, near the top of the page I'm seeing a 9pc set with no tension wrench, two 32pc sets for £17-£18 (more than I want to spend to make a point), and the set I got, for a tenner.
As for why I bought it at all? *shrugs*. It's fun to collect picks, it was cheap as chips, I don't like to think that I'm dissing products without first experiencing them (as per Bill's response to me), and hey - if I can get a review up on here, I can shed some light on Klom and banggood stuff. And who knows, maybe it'll be an amazing, breath-taking set that puts all the Petersons I have coming to shame...

Ugh, I identify with this. My GOSOs have been my main picks since I started and until I got the Sparrows set through the other day, and the metal is just too thick for a lot of the Yale Euro keyways. Even in the crummy Master locks it limits what tension wrenches I can fit in at the same time. That said, the rounded Z bar tension wrench with the GOSO set is still the one I mainly use due to its offset shape (if that makes any sense).

I think you made a good decision and I agree with Squelch.
No need for 20 picks. What you can't pick with 8 picks you won't be able to pick with 20 IMO :)
Eventually you will have 2-3 go to favourite picks anyway :)
To infinity... and beyond!
