What To Buy. Picks Sets For Beginners.

I bought a larger set when I started learning to pick, and after more experience with it, I learned how many picks I never used. My suggestion for novice pickers is to get a couple hooks and figure out how to use them. Out of all the tools in my set, I mostly use a medium sized hook or a smaller sized hook. I rarely touch the rakes, I just don't rake well or something and always end up grabbing my hook again. Also I know the question was what to buy, but making your own is definitely a good option. I usually just use tension wrenches that I have made out of wiper blade inserts. it only takes a couple of seconds to get a few good bends or twists using a pair of pliers. Making a good pick can take some more time or better tools, but it can still be done.

I decided to go with a larger set from sparrow and another large HK set from Banggood. Primarily because I want them for physical templates to make my own and to get a feel for different picks out there as I have very limited experience. If I had to choose 2 picks and 2 tension tools to be "the" kit, do any of you long timers have any recommendations?

i bought a real cheap set with alot of picks. pretty much a waste of money. recently i bought the tremendous 12 from toool website and am loving them

By the way HK set is mostly useless. Only a couple good pieces in my opinion.

Hey there guys! I am completely brand new to lock picking. I would like to get into it though. Any suggests for the newbiest of new people? hehe. And also, how do you practice your skills? Go from door to door around your home? :p

Feel free to introduce yourself here.
Suggestions? Well first, read up around here, there's lots of info. Second, don't skimp on your first pick set, or get good at making your own. Thirdly, to practice, it's not recommended that you pick locks that are in use, because they can get screwed up. There are locks made specifically made for practicing available on the internet. "Habitat for humanity Restore" locations usually have cheap hardware, and scrap yards usually have locks lying around everywhere. At the scrap yards where you can poke around they usually have a lot of nice stuff. It's amazing what people throw away sometimes.

I ordered the Sparrows Kick Start set and the Expansion set. I know that's more than I need as a beginner. I'm not really interested in learning raking yet and several raking picks are in the 2 sets. I'm just interested in learning Single Pin Picking.

Will these 2 sets cover my needs well while learning SPP?

Both look like excellent sets, and I see they both have a hook pick or two you'll need for SPP practice.
