Master No. 5
Number of Pins: 4
Security: 0 (There is a steel anti-drill pin - see below)

So pin number one is an oddly shaped steel anti-drill pin. It has a pronounced bevel at the end that goes into the plug, and I think that this is where the trouble with picking it comes in. So far the only consistent results that I have had are from shoving an L rake all the way to the back of the lock, then pulling it out a little using the lightest tension possible the whole time. I can only SPP this lock successfully around one in ten times. My theory is that the bevel on pin one causes it to jam. For whatever reason, I cannot figure out what I am doing to get that first pin set correctly 10% of the time. I have seen the acutely beveled pins in a mortise that I have. All five of the pins in that lock are beveled like this, and it was a pain to SPP as well, combined with a restricted keyway, it was a nightmare. I destroyed the lock trying to make a cutaway out of it, however, I succeeded on another mortise with the same keyway; and I will be putting those pins in it to see what exactly is going on. I am willing to bet this first pin is what is giving others problems as well.

Sounds like a Bump Stop pin. These can be interesting since the driver only enters the plug a little bit so there is no spring tension on the key pin below it.

Could you please expand on Bump Stop pins? I know bump "resistant" countermeasures have been becoming more frequent as lock bumping has become more popular, but I haven't the slightest idea how they work.

There are different kinds of bump stops. Master Lock has the bump stop and Ilco has the bump halt. The master bump stop uses a special top pin that is shaped in a way that it does not enter the plug all the way. Because it does not enter the plug fully there is a space in between the key pin and bump stop driver. When a bump attack is attempted the space between the pins makes it difficult to successfully transfer the energy of the bump between the bottom key pin and top bump stop pin. At least that's what master lock claims.

This video visually explains: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kUJWc7rIj8I

The Ilco bump halt is special driver pin and an extra strong spring. The driver pin fits inside the spring similar to the Schlage F series pins. The extra strong spring screws up the energy transfer between bottom and top pin. Same concept as the master bump halt. IMO way more effective.

Does anybody suppose some production runs of a particular model might have security pins while others don't? Without cutting them apart, I think the ML 570 has 1 spool and the 575 has two spools, while being virtually the same lock, with different materials.

Can anybody tell me how many pins or security pins there are? Image

I believe it has four spool pins and one regular. I have one of these on my locker at work and it is great for getting use to spool pins. I honestly have an easier time picking this master lock than the others with no security pins. I have just gotten the Master lock M530 and have been trying for hours with no luck.

Thanks, homie:)

This simple lock is causing me issues.
When i apply tension, none of the pins bind, all very loose still.
It was fairly neglected before it came into my possesion.
Im going to spray lots of lube in it to see if a pin is somehow caught.

Your tension wrench is probably binding in the bottom of the keyway. Maybe try a different one, and see if that helps.

Don't suppose anyone knows whats inside the 3up masterlock?
Also, the I opened a magnum series, I believe it was a 930 today and it had 5 spools and 5 standard drivers
