The new Tensioners I made! What you think?

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

The new Tensioners I made! What you think?

Postby Maliphus7 » 16 Dec 2015 1:57

So been playing around with some tensioners lately and got playing with some ideas and heres some of what i came up with that i really liked and have started using.

I dono what to call it so been calling this the "You Tension" Because it looks like a U shape :) Also it does not fall out even when held upside down shaken etc it locks into place and stays can be used to tension both directions or to turn back even the slightest amount I would have to say its one of my new favorite tension wrenches now and its a back up pair of tweezers i suppose in case your customer has a uni-brow? I know the guys who only pick in Vices may not be concerned with it but if your stuck up against a storage unit or on a chain i think these options really make a world of difference among others i have that i didnt wanna spam too much.

Check it out i put a video of how it functions at the bottom i made also.

"You Tension Original Horizontal"

"You Tension Vertical Version"
(Didn't have time to shave the top post so in finalized one would take up less space by pins)

The Mini vertical Concept

The larger version of "You Tension" (I feel like its trying to tell me something?)

Even larger version leaves room in small keyways

How i have been doing my top of keyways mostly.

Upside Down Option to still have top of keyway

When you start experimenting with tension wrenches means you already are a good picker. Next step would be a TOK wrench made with a bicycle spoke.

Cheers :)

Or music wire. These are my favorite tension wrenches, and have a number of them, each filed to a slightly different thickness to fit various keyway widths.

Yea i really need to stop being lazy and go hunt down some bicycle spokes and play with them. I figured with these all being wipers and hose clamp anyone could easily bend them with a little patience and try something new at least since i haven't seen many options that weren't rigid so far.

But thats kinda the issue with being newer is usually nothing is new but unless its retailed there's no name to research things by and i haven't seen anything like this before other then the Falle set with the adjustable sliders etc.

Nice work. Mechanical advantage and fit is what tensioning is all about. You inspire me to get back to some much neglected bench work.

Have made a number of wishbone/tweezer tensioners before. First of that type I made was for a padlock with a teeny tiny cruciform keyway. It was my first cruciform lock, and wanted to pick it. :)

They are used frequently with automotive picking.

I've never had any luck with my hpc wishbones, but yours seem to work very well. Maybe on a cold snowy day I'll sit down and make one.

When i was working on these over and over i tried bending the top of the keyway peg repeatedly strait down and curved back a bit like a hook and tried everything i could to get it to not pop out when applying tension... after a while i found i needed to twist the end clockwise slightly so that the edges would hit and grab first rather then the flat of the post...

Also i found i had to bend the tip OUT away the opposite direction that makes any sense when your making a hook... I had to shallow my "hook" or "Finger" so that it would hook the bottom of the inner wall and prevent it from popping out at all.

Here is how it should look only talking about top of keyway.
