Okay, this is a heads up for all of you, so read on ...
"Beginning in 2016 the Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to notify enrolled Veterans of their period of health coverage during the previous year. The law also requires the VA TO PROVIDE NOTIFICATION TO THE INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE (IRS)."
You should be receiving this form in the mail if you are a vet, and enrolled in the VA program. As I am listed as an "Agent Orange" vet (Vietnam) I am covered. I should be getting one from Medicare as well. For the rest of you this is how they are going to wring the cash for non compliance out of you. Either you pay the insurance mafia or pay a fine. I guess MY question is if you can't "afford" the overpriced health insurance, how are you going to pay the fine?
As a small biz there is no way, no how I could afford any of the so called "affordable plans". Most of my profits would be eaten up by those costs. This is just another way our masters are making war on business. You are caught between the greedy medical profession, the insurance mafia which will cut you off at the first sign of a big payout, and the government who got talked into forcing this law thru congress.
Just remember to fill out your new form when you file in April - MY guess is a 1040 - 1095 - B and check off the right boxes. In my case line 8 and the box is filled in with a "C" - Government sponsored health plan.
Either you pay the insurance mafia now, or uncle later, and still have to find a way to pay the mafia their gallon of blood monthly.

The fine is cheaper than the insurance. And yes, I have insurance.

I thought that the goober nut could only collect the fine from moneys owed you from your return. So, if you claim more deductions, and 'plan' to pay at tax time, they would never be able to collect as you never get a check.
Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool. Wisdom is not just in determining how to do something, but also includes determining whether it should be done at all.

Nope. The "fine" is a reduction of your tax deduction amount by a penalty determined by spending 30 minutes reading the instructions and 5 minutes doing the math on the little chart you print out. In my case it was $95 as opposed to way more to obtain insurance. ~~ Evan

My wife works a union job (15 years at Safeway) so we get insurance through that. But I looked at the numbers and if we were to get a similar plan, it would be over $1200/month!!!

I still can't understand why Americans don't want a socialized medical system for everyone. They don't mind it for the military, vets, or the elderly but get upset when it is mentioned for the ordinary working aged persons. I've got a friend who is totally freaked out about "socialized medical care". He won't buy insurance and never pays his hospital bills (yes he is in poor health surprise surprise), so I and you end up paying his bills through higher prices. Guess what he has socialized medicine!
The medical industry, pharma, and insurance are raping the people.

So the medical system for vets is so good? My wife is retired USAF, so we have that "medical care" you mention. We use Tricare Prime. We have to argue with the insurance company with every single thing we have done. They deny every claim, even with prior authorization and referral from them. My wife must spend 5-10 hours every freaking week on the phone with the insurance company (of which we have no choice in using) and our primary care provider. Agree with what the insurance companies are doing. Think we should consider not promoting or speaking against medical care, as this is a lock picking forum, not a political forum. Do appreciate the OP giving a heads-up that people need to be sure to have the proof of insurance starting this year, or face penalties under the law. But it is time to either keep the thread to the heads-up message or to lock the thread. Gordon

No need for that. My comment was not directed at you even if I responded to your post as well. Several members, including myself, have started pulling the thread away from original intent.

...and this is why we don't discuss politics or religion on this forum, everyone gets defensive and touchy. Sinifar, no more of these posts types of posts please.. I get it, you wanna go vent about stuff like insurance rates, but this forum is not your personal soap box to rant about stuff that grinds your gears. I much more prefer to read your stories about the daily life of a locksmith going out on a call. We all have insurance premiums to pay, things that aren't covered, high prescription costs, and that's life, but this is not the venue to complain about it. locking this thread.. PM me if you have any comments or concerns, my door is always open. Squelchtone
