Lockpick set, is this newbie good?

Just started with this cool new hobby

I was looking for a good newbie lock pick set, and found this on banggood:

Is it good for a beginner?

I actually ordered that kit through the wish app on my phone a few days ago just for the case and the picks I didn't have. It could be complete crap, and probably isn't very strong steel so I'm not getting my hopes up on that. I just wanted a bigger case honestly. If I get it soon I'll let you know.. But coming from China it could be another month. Never know.

I have the Goso 24pc set. There are some pics of it in my Pics of my picks thread, I'm also working on some reviews at the moment.

Long story short - there are a lot of picks you'll never use (automotive etc), the finish isn't great, they're a little on the thick side (fine for US locks probably, not so great for my European slim keyways) and the moulding is such that they have sharp moulding mark lines on the edges which make them a bit scratchy and uncomfortable to use. That said, they are cheap and they do pick locks. Personally I'd recommend starting with a small Southord set - or, for a bit more money, Sparrows, Southord Max or Petersons. That said, as I mention they will do the job fine, they won't fall apart and catch on fire, probably

This post has links to all of the mentioned brands (sparrows link in the second post) except SouthOrd max, which I don't have a source for, at least where I am in the UK. I bought mind from LockpickShop, but all of their pages except the homepage now give a 500 server error.

Depends where you are in Europe though. You may be better off just googling the name of the pick set you like and your country (for example, "Sparrows lockpicks buy Sweden") and see what comes up for your locale. Many vendors will ship internationally, too.

That's cool that they're back up and working - but you're right. They have no "contact" or "about us" kind of links, the social media icons at the bottom of the page just jump up to the top, and upon checking my old order in December I see that they never even sent me an email; the only proof of the order that I have is a Paypal email. For some reason they seem to want to stay un-contactable. Hmm.

Some other places you could check:

4. LockpicksDepot:
Note that the site layout, products and logo are identical to Lockpickshop, so if not completely the same company they are probably connected with lps in some way. That said, they *do* have a contact us link!

Don't forget when buying that they have both Euro thickness picks (black handles) and US thickness picks (grey handles). The US ones are thicker so if you're used to mostly working with European style narrower keyways, make sure you buy the black handle / Euro ones .

Hopefully one of those will bear fruit! Sorry that I wasn't able to find a reseller directly in your own country

I have been able to open these 2 looks multiple times, but not in a very structured way. Just by applying some pressure on the tension tool, and poking the pins




This Abus look i have not been able to open, because the tension tool, is to wide, it's only a 30mm wide lock. Hopefully i can do it with another tool.
When i master these 3, ill start looking at Ruko 500 series cylinder locks

Ah, I see your problem! You're trying to pick the infamous "ghost" padlocks, which are like regular padlocks, except invisible

Seriously though, that's a great start, especially with the Klom set!

Oh, and don't worry, that's pretty much how I pick at the moment, too

Pictures are of the new design in shackleless padlocks with no bodies. They work on the same principle as the air guitar.

They are quite easy to open, but be careful if you misplace them, they are hard to find

Not sure if the third lock is supposed to be cut off? Sometimes my Photobucket ones do that but clicking through takes you to the main image, but your click-through just goes to the image site. Still though, nice going! .
