I have an opened safe, what's the combo?

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

I have an opened safe, what's the combo?

Postby fgarci03 » 20 Jun 2013 19:43

Hello all,

One question that pops a lot is people who bought on inherited houses with a safe there. The combination was lost and the door was left open.
If the safe has a combination lock just like this one, you may find this helpfull:
Image

So to start, look at the back of the door. There should be the lock. Remove the screws and the cover and you should get something like this:
Image

On inserting the combination, basically what you are doing is rotating those wheels, aligning those cutted parts (gates) under the fence:
Image

So, in order to do it, follow these steps (do it at your own risk, beware that locks may vary but the principle is the same for most of them):

1. Rotate the dial several times to the left untill you see ALL the wheels rotating (usually 3 turns).
2. Stop when the last wheel that was picked up (usually is the wheel that is closest to the dial, but may not be) is aligned under the fence (that part you saw on the last image).
3. Look at the number on the dial. On this case it's 33, the first number of the combination:
Image

4. Rotate the dial to the right untill you pick just the other wheels but before picking the last one (usually 2 turns).
5. Stop when the second wheel is aligned under the fence and look at the number on the dial:
Image

6. Do the same (to the left) with the last wheel untill you get this:
Image
As you can see, all the wheels are aligned, and the fence can now drop into the gates.

7. Look at the number:
Image

8. Rotate the dial to the right (on the image the arrows are pointing to the left, but remember you are rotating the dial from the front of the safe) until you align that cut on the wheel that is different from the others with the nose of the fence:
Image

To get this:
Image

If it drops, like on the image, everything is good. If it doesn't, you got one or more numbers wrong (usually just a little bit off, but wrong nonetheless). Repeat the process untill it drops. And don't forget to write down the numbers.

If the fence drops, test the combination a couple of times to see if it works, before closing the safe.

One very important thing:
Most locks have a piece called relocker that doesn't allow the bolt to retract when the cover is off. It's not important in this case, where you just need to get the combo. But in order to properly operate the lock, the cover must be in place. So be sure to test everything multiple times before closing the safe. And for the love of god, DO NOT CLOSE THE SAFE without installing the cover of the lock again.

If you did everything right, when you dial the combo and rotate to the right again, it will get a little click. Rotate more and BANG! Bolt retracted:
Image

In this case, the combo was 33-5-62 (rotating left-right-left, and then right again untill it opens).
If you have any doubts, post them here, and we'll be glad to help

Hope I helped,
Good luck!
Go ahead, keep plugging away, picking on me! You will end up on bypass or with rigor mortise.

And if you see your spindle or spline key looking like that, call a locksmith.

Awww, that!
I just mounted this lock so I didn't insert the spline key properly, just a little bit to lock the spindle on the drive cam!
And the spindle is sticking off because I screwed it to the end, as I didn't mount it on a stand.

Here's a video for you to see the wheels rotating:

Great write up FG! :)

Can I just add that 2 points to your guide:
In case you are totally new to safe locks:
-When you read the numbers from the dial: be careful: you might think you aligned the gates, but it can cheat the untrained eyes and you might have misaligned everything by 1 number. The point is to make the "fence" fall into the gates.
-Be mindful that some safe locks have 4 discs. That means you have to turn the dial 5 times at the beginning and you have to do everything so that you have an extra disc to deal with.
To infinity... and beyond!

What part don't you understand?

Does the groove for the spline key go all the way down the dial shaft? Whats stopping someone from punching or drilling out just the spline key?

Yes, the groove for the spline key is the entire length of the spindle.

What would be gained by 'removing' the spline key? The lock just would not work.

Great writeup, FG, it can seem daunting to figure out a combo for an open safe, but if you know the basics of how they work, take your time and just play with it, it's not that hard.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Great Tutorial Indeed, I just might add, that although you may get the proper combination aligned. It is still a good idea to have a Safe Tech look at the safe before you use it.

Especially if you are intending to keep something of value inside. The bolt work could be sticky, the door could be sagging, the lock may be on it's last legs. Also, sometimes getting the combo like this can be tricky because the true combo maybe 20- 40.5 - 59.5 as oppose to 20- 40- 60.

A safe tech can change the combo for you and make sure the combo aligns at the numbers you want, not a bad price usually too, considering you have the safe open!

How hard would it be to take apart the inside of the dial, and make your own combination? It looks like from the pictures that the wheels are centered on the threaded spindle.

here is an easy way to ensure the gates are lined up under the fence.. if they are already lined up and the lock is open.. take a black perm marker and mark the side of the wheels close to a "feature" in the body of the lock..

a lot of times it can be hard to see the gate since the fence is in the way, but the black markers are easily seen.. eg at the 7 oclock position.

if the case of the lock in the image, I would use the 6 oclock position with the molded support that you can see

Great write up. Alot of times if the combination has never been changed, I found the change key behind the panel on the inside of the safe door.
