Recent batch of DIY picks

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Recent batch of DIY picks

Postby uijoti » 18 Jan 2016 23:08

A friend asked for his first set, so I made a couple of things for me and a few for him.

Profiling the picks and one top of keyway wrench. I used steel from a drain snake, is about .030" when starting.

After a little time at the grinder, only taking a little off at a time and quenching even though it's 10 degrees out haha.

After filing and sanding with progressively finer sandpaper, I think that 220,300,480,600,800, and 1500 were used. I still didn't get mirror because it was getting late and I wanted to get them done. Turned out about .025".

Some still tacky plastidip for handles!

Let me know what you think! I'm looking at other ideas for handles, as I don't like the shape of the plastidip and the raw steel is too small. I like the feel of it though.

I like how they turned out, especially the handles.

I tried doing two handles with copper tubing. Squeezing them in a vise, the ID was just enough to tap the picks in- so they are nice and tight.
The second one in the picture, that I did- I tried putting cardboard between it and the vise jaws to dampen the teeth marks a little.
They feel good in hand.. Although much heavier than my plastic handled ones.

Thanks! I old the way those copper handles look. I'll have to try it if I can find a vice to use!

The instructions in the FAQ section actually recommend using Imgur, that's what we prefer =)

The tubing I used looks to be 8mm OD and 5.5mm ID.

@uijoti: Those look nice. If that's a first attempt, it's a pretty darn good one.
I like the copper handle idea. Maybe use a hammer if you don't like the vise marks.

Thanks! Third try, first go with a bench grinder. They turned out pretty well, and I've made some more since then. The handles didn't turn out as well, but for the steel shaping I'm continuing to get better! I have some sweet ideas for handles, definitely want to make a wood handled set but need to research more into how that process works. I've seen a few tutorials that look good :D

Here's a pic of the recent set, sorry for potato quality (and hopefully I can get it this time, if not link below dead pic):
