Help with a WB

Postby smokedoff » 25 Jan 2016 8:37

Hey guys, new here and new to picking. I grabbed this lock the other day, made some picks and a tension wrench and have picked it once. I can hear pins when trying to set them and also when I let the tension off...so I don't know exactly what I'm hearing. Have tried many different tensions and styles of picking (from watching videos). Help please, maybe I picked a tough lock to begin with. I'll post pics when I figure out how.

Thanks

yikes at those picks, its awesome that they even opened that lock once. WB makes good locks, so don't feel bad, my professional picks might have trouble with picking one open.

If you're looking to get into this hobby, I'd recommend making some picks out of hacksaw blades, paperclips and bobby pins only go so far.

At a bare minimum, get a windshield wiper from the trash can in front of Auto Zone or Pep Boys and get the stainless strip of metal out of it, cut it to 4 inches long, and put a 1/2 inch bend at one end. file the ends so you don't cut your hands and you got a free tension wrench.

For the pick the stainless steel of a large safety pin is far better than the metal of a paperclip or hair pin. Use some pliers to straighten one out, file the sharp pointy end down, and use pliers to make a wave /\/\_____ or a \____ hook shape and use the other part of it as a handle. It will be short but it should get the job done.

It may help to put that padlock in the naughty box for a while and start on something like a Master Padlock No.3 or a Defiant deadbolt from Home Depot.

Happy picking!

Haha...thanks! That actually tells me a lot. The thing in the top of the pic has flat sides filed into it and that has been my tension wrench, the lower whatcha-am-call-its were my "rake" and single hook pic. Primitive maybe, but it has gotten me interested. I will upgrade tools and back off on locks and see what happens.

Thanks!

So I backed off to a master no 3. And built a new wrench and bogota style pick from wiper blades. I can pick it but not extremely consistant. I can't rake it either, I have the best luck with a hook made from a Bobby pin. Exciting though! May post pic later.
