Is It Normal ...

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

... to have a Sargent & Greanleaf dial on a La Gard lock? I purchased a S&G change key but ended up needing a La Gard change key.

I have a Major Model 1712 safe.

It happens occasionally. Major safes usually have S&Gs, so the La Gard was likely a replacement, but they didn't change the dial.

Thanks. The prior owner inherited the safe from a deceased relative so couldn't update me on the safe's history and the possible swap of the lock.

I am curious about the La Gard lock and change key operation. It seems that the wheels when aligned and the gate locked on, the change key hole would go through the last of three holes on the wheels. I'm not sure how it would then engage. I'll see if I can post a picture.

Perhaps someone can post a picture of a La Gard lock with the La Gard change key inserted.

Again - thank you.

If you dial to the change index and not the opening index then the change key will line up. You could also dial normally except drawing back the bolt and then remove cover and move the wheels together so that the change key lines up properly.

Looks good to me, I think you are looking for trouble changing the combo without the proper knowledge,
but it's your funeral.
Screw the back cover back onto the lock, the cover holds the change key in the proper position
Dial the combo to the safe, but this time use the index line to the left of the original dial index
insert the change key through the back cover into the lock all the way and turn it 1/4 of a turn
Dial your new combo using the index line to the left of the original dial index
Turn change key back and remove it from the back cover
dial the new combo to the original dial index and try the combo--Do this with the safe door open several times
Once you are 100% sure the new combo works and every time you try it you can lock the safe door shut

There are additional rules for the operation of this lock such as the forbidden zone that you likely know nothing about

Jim,

Thank you. With the cover off, should the safe key be inserted in the end of the elliptical grove in the wheels at the point that is currently at about 5 o'clock in the picture I attached? I think it would need to be rotated to about 7 o'clock given where the hole is on the cover.

"Forbidden Zone". Cool - tell me more.

Yes, that is correct. Don't set your last number between 0-20 for LaGard, but I never choose a number from 90-20 just to be safe.
