Why don't all brands have .015 picks?

Requires better steel and it's too expensive.

Below .022 picks are too weak for non-extraordinary use.

pick minimum thicknesses by brand

Postby Thanshin » 4 Feb 2016 8:13

If I read correctly:
Southord standard picks are .025±.002
Southord slimlines are .022±.002
Sparrows tuxedo are .025 but have one .015
Petersons start at .025 and have .018 and .015 sets.

The doubt this arises is "Why wouldn't Southord reach .015 even in its slimlines?".

I think when I checked my HPC picks, the 2000 series were .020, the standard ones were .025 and the heavy duty ones were .032, just going off memory. I don't remember the thickness of any of my other pick brands, not sure why I remembered the HPC.

I think the reason most companies don't go below .020 is because most pickers are too heavy handed and would bend the ever-living-crap out of them. Also, if you really need slim picks, take your .020 or .022 picks, get some wet/dry sandpaper and polish them up. The rounding will help you maneuver in keyways and it'll help thin them out too.
