I don't use sound that much to tell you the truth. It's done more by feel. Either way a stethoscope isn't necessary.

dont work - they scratch around on the metal surface and you hear a whole lot of noise and not much else

Generally my heart rate stays pretty constant while picking locks, but right when I feel that last pin set, and I get a quick double-thump in my heart, and it's pretty sweet.

I use a Fischer brand, but can't tell you the model...

Yeah those Fischer and Price brand stethoscopes are wonderful :wink:

there was a post some time ago on this. i made one to try and its ok.
get a mecanics stethoscope and tape a tension wrench to it. its ok but not great.
a mecanics stethoscope doesnt have a flat plate on it like a doctors but it has a thin bar instead

Some locksmiths have this thing they do where they "hear" with their fingers. Your sense of touch is sensitive enough to let you know what's going on inside the lock to a degree, don't overcomplicate things with superfluos gear.

lol my cheap combo lock emits a louder than normal click when it hits the correct combo, tryed it with my dad stephoscope.. really easy

Erm, I hate to burst your bubble, but combo locks dont "Click" well none that ive seen, as the wheels are aligned under do preasure on them once they are all aligned you then pull the catch down which pulls the locking sytem away from the shackle....Unless cheap locks are crap....and do click....

He's probably talking about a Master-knock off combination lock. Put some pressure on the shackle. When you spin the wheel, it makes 'clicks' as the mechanism rolls over the false notches. When it hits to correct, it may make a louder 'click'

Does anyone have experience with building their own electronic stehtoscope? I was thinking about buying one at first, but they are very expensive. So I'm wondering whether you could use the pickups from guitars or cellos and similar instruments together with a cheap amplifier to make your own. These are after all built to pick up the vibration of the instrument body and not the surroundings, pretty much like what you'd need for picking. Any experiences?
