Anyone have any idea if Lockwood locks were made here in the US at one time or just blanks or what.

My parents house in Massachusetts has a Lockwood mortise cylinder on the front door they don't use. I believe Lockwood was popular around here back in like ~1950-1970, and now it's owned by ASSA Abloy Group and sold mostly in Australia.

I don't think that there's a connection between the older American "Lockwood" brand and the Australian "Lockwood" brand. The "Lockwood" brand first appeared in Australia in 1934, and has always (to the best of my knowledge) been produced there. I have pinning charts for the American "Lockwood", but I can't find a lot of info on their company history.

Here is a USA Lockwood vintage cylinder logo:

Do any vintage Australian lockwoods have the same logo? That would probably answer the question.

or someone call call Lockwood and ask to speak to the company historian.

@eurolock fan:

That looks like a standard simplex profile Lockwood keyway...

"American" Lockwood is still producing locks... They are just an obscure older brand at this point in time that has been forgotten for the other manufacturers who are all divisions of a few bigger multi-national-conglomerate corporations... Such as Assa-Abloy, Ingersoll Rand, Black and Decker and Stanley...

Lockwood Industries, Inc.

1100 Corporate Drive
Burlington, ON L7L 5R6, Canada
(905) 331-3008

http://www.lockwood1878.com

All they have up on their website is catalog cut sheet portions, no technical information at all...

Many large institutions back in the day used to use 6 or 7 pin systems using Lockwood sectional keyways...

Lockwood is still very much around but I don't see them very often. They still make a fairly full line. They have 26 Lockwood keyways currently. They were founded in 1878. Have their catalog at work.

They seemed to make nightlatches, padlocks (pin and wafer) and lever cabinet locks originally. A useful product was their dropbolt (British manufacturers did not seem to make dropbolts. Then in early 1960's or so they produced cylinder mortise locks with their own style of oval cylinders which has become a de-facto standard in Australia (a double cylinder lock uses two separate cylinders unlike Euro cylinders) and about the same time introduced sectional keyways. The mortise locks were single bolt, either a square end deadlock or a latch bolt operated by handles or cylinder and locked by key or turn knob, and later a deadlatch function was added. There was a sliding door deadlock version with 'wings' that extended beyond the bolt when locked and a metal door lock a bit like Kawneer. They also produced wafer cam locks (including a masterkeyed version) for a while but seemed to have lost the market to L&F. These products seem are completely different from the North American Lockwood products. All these developments were well before ASSA Abloy purchased Lockwood. Their standard keyway (commonly known as C4) is also used by other manufacturers.
