Throwing down the Gaunlet: Mosler Monster vs the Newbie

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Throwing down the Gaunlet: Mosler Monster vs the Newbie

Postby Kontoboy » 22 Feb 2016 15:17

About six months ago I posted on this forum for the first time. I successfully manipulated an old Meilink that my son and I wrestled out of curbside trash pick up late one rainy evening. (See http://www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=61049)

Since then I've been diligently looking for my next opponent. Today I found it advertised for free on in the local ads.

Image

(Sorry for the low quality image--it is all that was provided).

It is described as 2' W x 3' D x 4-1/2' H in good condition and over 500 lbs! They say they have the combination but it doesn't work (wrong sequence or wrong combination maybe?). They want it out of their office and are giving it away. I'm picking up on Thursday.

As a 500+ pound Mosler I'm defintely moving into the heavyweight division with this one. I was wondering if any of the members have any insights into my next opponent?

Thank in advance.

Picked up the Mosler today. It was a bit of a bear but with two strong guys, an appliance dolly and a little ingenuity we were able to get it out of the building into my garage. However the Mosler was not the opponent I was expecting.

The owner claimed they had the safe for seven years and had several people make several attempts to open it over the years with no success. Using the combination they provided and dialing instructions from the internet I was able to open it on the third try!

It turns out to be a surplus GSA secure cabinet. It's still pretty beefy with lots of storage capacity but it's burglary and fire protection are limited.

I'm unsure about the lock manufacturer but it seems beefy.

The only treasure the safe gave up was an envelope with a will inside. Google revealed the author was long deceased so I intend to leave it be.

I think for this one I'll just install some shelves or rolling drawers and keep in in the garage. After today I have no desire to ever move it again. Maybe someone will find my will inside one day!

Nice job on the moving and opening! it looks like you have a click click lock. when you dialed back towards 0 after entering the 3 numbers, did you get the click and then feel the fence drop down, then kept turning the dial until it stopped altogether? As you may have read, the extra mechanical clicks in the dial was put there to confuse and slow down anyone trying their hand at safe cracking. I found these open consistently if you dial them slowly. Most locks don't have clicks, it's bugs me when a tv show or movie have a constant click click click click sound as the bad guy / spy turns the dial.. funny enough recently made Sentry fire "safes" cabinets, the dial has an annoying ratchet that makes a constant click click click noise.. I think they put it there because that's what the general public expects to hear. oh, you can take the yellowed plastic ring off the dial as well, it just pops off and is there as a dust cover.

Have you taken the back cover off to change the combination or will you be leaving it on the one it came with?

Thanks for following up!

Congrats on your new safe. The lock is a Mosler, too. A very nice safe. :)

Yes, definitely had the click moving paste the last number and continuing to turn to retract the bolt.

I haven't taken the back off the lock yet. I'm on the road today and next week so I haven't had a chance. Once I'm back home I'll open it up and post a picture.
