Need help picking a bump key for FSIC lock

Postby eric_johnson » 5 Mar 2016 18:22

Hi y'all,

I currently have a practice lock that I use for my lockpicks, and I want to try out bumpkeys on it. The lock is a schlage FSIC and I don't have a key so I don't know the specifications of it. I do know however, that the lock has 6 pins in it.

Here are the bump keys that I have to choose from:

Schlage SC9

Schlage SC4

Schlage SC20

Which one would work in the lock I have? Picture: http://i.imgur.com/IAWDCAT.jpg

do you have the bump keys yet or are those for you to choose from on a site where you will be buying some?

if you have the bump keys already, simply count the valleys and see if it has 6 valleys and then try to insert it into the lock to see if it fits.

I think your padlock is a CE keyway...

Looks like the same Kryptonite LFIC padlock I have which is EF keyway. In that case an SC20 would be your best bet.

I defer to you Jeff since you work a lot more with Allegion stuff..

here's a handy chart to go with this thread:

"All Section Key, Stainless Steel - Factory Cutting Recommended"

Regarding the L blanks...heed this advice, unless you're looking to replace a cutting wheel on your Speedex

The ones I have are Schlage originals but definitely not stainless.

Well I haven't seen a brass Schlage key that I can recall, they all are nickel silver which is a sort of brass but in the trade we differentiate the two.

All my OEM SC19 and SC20 (I think those are the 5 and 6 pin L section keyway) blanks are steel. I only got them because I couldn't find nickel silver at the time. Wouldn't mind getting a few at some point if they're available.

I managed to find some aftermarket (Ilco?) brass ones but that keyway is pretty thin. I'd be nervous about using that as a bump key too many times, at least in brass. The only time I've ever been asked for this keyway is for bump keys. I'm not a fan of bump keys myself and I don't bother to cut them for people anymore, but I still like having a good selection of blanks just in case.

hey MBI and anyone else who may know,

not to deviate too much from the OP's question on bumping his padlock, but is JET still a viable company to get blanks from? I know I use to see their stuff all the time around New England, especially the colorful aluminum ones.

Thanks

I've used them and they're OK I guess but I usually only get them if they're the only brand I can find for some particular blank. I prefer OEM blanks but if they're not available or if it's just too expensive for a box of OEM blanks when I only need a very small quantity, I'd take Ilco over Jet if I had the choice. I've seen more bad blanks in my boxes of Jet blanks than Ilco or Silca.

As for the aluminum blanks, I hate the noise my machine makes when cutting them.
I've been told they dull the cutter faster but I don't know if that's true or not.

That's just my two cents. There are guys on the forum who have cut WAY more keys that I ever will, hopefully some of them can provide additional feedback.

Jet makes excellent blanks. My work uses them almost exclusively when it comes to non-OEM.
I really like their nickel silver line.
