Pick Handle Ideas?

Postby spegasus » 14 Jan 2015 19:48

Hey guys, making my own picks for the first time, would like to hear some ideas for handles! I have seen the wire wrap handle tutorial, and heard a few other ideas, like plastic dowels, but I am wondering if any of you guys know of anything I haven't seen yet! Also, has anyone heard how kerpeesh makes his handles? His look really cool. You can see them in this video.

If you're making your own picks, the body of the pick handle can be any size/shape you want, so...

How about braided cord. Para cord is probably a bit thick, but something similar in a smaller diameter essentially plaited around and up the handle as you work from one end of the pick handle until you reach the other end. Pull the cord tight enough as you go and you'll end up with a handle as firm as any other type. I've added this finish to several pick handles and it works just fine. Still get great feedback and if anything, better control when manipulating the pick. Don't have any pics right now, but if you're really interested I could post some.

I use gutted paracord. It's not thick after you gut it, lasts a while, cheap, multicolored, grips well and is pretty easy to install. I've posted a tutorial on how I do it here.http://www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=60307&p=443978#p443978

You can use Plasti Dip. Plasti Dip also comes in different colors . Some people like others don't, I personally like it. Heres a video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Zu_0mjmLxU

You can also cut some metal, steam punk style, and then weld it onto your pick, then you can polish it sand it and spray paint a stencil on it and gloss right over the handle. Would be a cool project to see on Lp101

I have used wire, nylon cord, metal, popsicle sticks, shrink tubing and plasti-dip .... They all work to a degree ....

Folks with woodcarving skills, metalworking skills and a nice shop setup make some beautiful handles. I work with a grinder, Dremel tool and files .... :(

The best advice I can offer is to try different things and see which works best for you ....

One last thing that I would offer .... The "fatter" the handle and the "spongier" the handle, the more feedback you will lose. When I make a specialized pick out of stainless steel feeler gauge stock, I leave it "bare metal". That's about the best feedback you can get, IMHO.

Hi, I can see you're typing all of your posts on a mobile phone, can you slow it down a bit, check your spelling and add a comma or two?

Thank you

Depends if you want look or feel. For look, wood is always the nicest looking. For feel plasti dip and heatshrink both feel good.
Plasti dip mixed 1 part grit 3 parts plasti dip gives a nice grip.
