Front door lock picked...but not unlocked!!

Postby Matthais_31 » 11 Nov 2004 21:57

Hi all :)

Despite your advice...I decided to pick my front door :P Turns out that I picked it - i.e. the cylinder turned - but the door did not unlock. I dont understand why. At first I thought i might need 2 rotations, but upon using the key i found this wasnt the case. I also remembered something about rotating pins, but decided that this was also wrong as non of the pins seemed rotatable...!

Any ideas as to why the door will not unlock? It is a Euro style lock with a thumb turn on the other side, with the pins upside down (as im sure readers of my other posts will know!!!)

Thanks for the help...apologies for bringing up the same lock time and time again!

Matt

Your lock is of a design that requires some intereaction with the tip of your key. Usually you have to push in a pin. Try using the back of a second tension wrench for this.

As chucklz has pointed out you need to insert your tension wrench right to the back of the lock to take control of the cam and turn with it under a little pressure.

That did the trick :) Lol it wasnt so much a pin as a place right at the back, easy pushing! Think I might have to get a new cylinder though...its fairly scary that ive been picking for less than a week and I can now effectivly break into my own home. Makes you think what criminals with a little bit of determination could do :S

Thanks for the help

The same thing happened to me too, and after trying out this technique I was successful. Thanks! :D

To be honest, I am somewhat shocked by the qualilty of lock on my front door. After picking for a week I can defeat this lock, meaning that the amature theif could indeed break into my home with minimal effort. Shocking to say the least

You also have to remember, most thieves don't practice lockpicking.

To enter your house, they would use another method. I am sure you would have noticed if they were practicing on your door lock the same amount of time you have.

Locks only keep honest people 'honest.'

The locks on my house serve that purpose. And I am happy with that.

OH!

I also forgot to mention all other 'ways of entry' into your home. If your front door lock is easily picked, what about your back door, garage door, patio door, or every window in the house?

No matter what lock you put up, SOMEONE will be able to pick it. It will take time, and a thief does not have that time available to him.

If security of your home is very important, An electronic security system is the only real option to give you peace of mind. ( unless you forgot to ARM it. ) :D

you know i get sick of people giving me funny looks when they ask what my hobbys are. you can see that they imeidatly think you are a thief and untrustworthy, you then have to explain to this person that a thief wont bother picking locks. just to get a bit of resect back.
rant rant rant it winds me up just because some one likes to drink doesnt make them a acoholic does it

Yeah its a really good sport! So much better than paintball IMHO due to proper tactics and the like. They have stoped making the XM177 now too, hope you got a half decent price for it :)

I have an airsoft gun... the only use I have for it though is to shoot at the squirels who try to eat our bird seed or chew up the hammock.
