UK Picks/Picking?

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

UK Picks/Picking?

Postby emt1581 » 14 Mar 2016 17:09

I've noticed that the lion's share of pick companies and youtube vids are by people in the UK. Is picking (as a sport/hobby) like a national past time across the pond? I was there maybe 15-20 years back...never noticed anything. Then again, I wasn't looking for it.

Another thought is that maybe picks are legal in the US and UK...but perhaps elsewhere they are outlawed which is why I'm seeing mostly UK and US companies/vids.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks

One youtube channel leads to another similar channel. In the last 5 to 10 years youtube videos were mostly US pickers like jkthecjer, kokomolock, wizwazzle (awol70 on this forum), my own channel which I have since disabled, dougfarre, jgor, jruther2, toolymcgee, Schuyler Towne, and many others. The new wave may be a bunch of UK guys, or maybe youtube's algorithm is showing you only newer videos or ones it feels are related so it looks like all UK pickers. Then there's bosnianbill, he's a force all on his own.

There was a forum called EZPicking (If memory serves me right, which it sometimes doesn't) which had a lot of their members making youtube videos. I think wizwazzle was the most prolific one of the bunch, while the members here stuck to this forum and wrote up forum posts with photos instead of making videos.

The only UK pick companies I know are Storm and MadBob's, and Chris Belcher's specialized lever lock opening tools. I can't imagine there isn't a whole bunch of pick videos with Southord, Sparrows, and Peterson picks in them.

I thought about that possibility...that youtube, for whatever reason, was steering me toward the UK vids. And that makes sense.

As for other sites/forums, there was one I saw a few times with "key" in the title. Even recognized a few members here on it. Not sure what it was.

Thanks for sharing the info.

What happened with Kokomolock? Have not seen anything from him in three years.
