Buying a bunch of locks -- what else should I get?

Postby wheremylocksat » 19 Mar 2016 13:20

I'm a beginner. Are there any other locks from Amazon I should add to my order before shipping this off? Any Kwikset/Schlages I should check out? Any other locks in general? Trying to get a good assortment. All my tools are Peterson.

This is what I am considering so far. What might you add/change?

Beginner? Scratch all of them and start with a repinnable practice lock.

Why scrap them all? What kind of repinnable practice lock might you recommend?

I did order this but it's not from Amazon: https://learnlockpicking.com/product/7- ... tice-lock/

So? Amazon is not the only market place on the internet. Are you doing that whole Prime thing so you prefer to order a lot on Amazon or are you not trusting of other web sites because of all the wives tales going around that you'll get your credit card info stolen if you shop online?

I use my credit cards and I have a Paypal account for places that don't take cards. Never had an issue in 16 years of buying stuff online. As someone already mentioned, ebay is a great place for new and used locks, Mr. Wizard here sells a practice lock similar to the one linked above, you'd get so much more mileage out of it than picking a bunch of Master padlocks.

If you are a beginner, take it easy on the Peterson's, be a shame to bend or break nice expensive picks like those.

I buy stuff on Amazon too, but for locks and picks there are better places.

This is typically why, yes.

I'll check eBay out too, though -- thanks. Anything in particular you'd recommend?

I'm operating under the assumption that not a whole lot of pressure is needed to pick locks. I don't have any reason to abuse the tools.

I'm a beginner myself, and highly recommend the practice lock from Mr.Wizard here. The amount of variations you could have in it- would far exceed a comparable amount of individual locks you'd ever want to buy. Up to seven pins, each one being standard pins, serrated, spools, wafers, or any combination of them. I find the keyway a little trickier than my cheap masterlock, no name lock, and lower end brinks locks.

How does the lock from Mr. Wizard differ from the one I linked above from learnlockpicking.com, out of curiosity?

Not much (as far as I can tell), but I do like supporting forum members when I can.

Either way I think that's a more useful approach to praciting, instead of piling up on padlocks. While I love the idea of a padlock collection, it's not in my budget.

The master padlocks are good to start with but you will be bored with them very quickly when you see how easy they open. And I think the lockout safety locks aren't as much for securing things as they are for keeping someone from accidentally turning on power so they probably aren't much of a challenge.
Are you getting into lock picking as a hobby or for occupational reasons? I only ask because my recommendations for practice locks would be different.

If you are a hobbyist the goal is usually to unlock the lock consistently by the SPP method. So I would suggest an easily repinnable cylinder like the other folks suggest and a few padlocks of varying levels. Your probably on track with what you have.

If you are learning for an occupational reason then your goal is to get past the lock in the shortest amount of time. Sometimes that's SPP picking or raking or sometimes bypass etc. For this type I would recommend a few deadbolts and a vice or some way to mount them. padlocks are good for this too but they should be locked to something fixed so you get used to opening them when they are not in the most ideal position. And pick up a Masterlock 175. You will also get a good idea of which locks are faster to rake and which are only going to open with SPP or a combination of the two.

I hope my post doesn't offend anyone as my thoughts are general.

Sounds good

I do have this vice already http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00011QA0M -- saw this one in several Bosnianbill videos.

Also there seem to be quite a few 175's https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss ... r+lock+175

He probably meant something like a 140 or 150 I'm guessing.

Sorry for the confusion. The master 175 suggestion was if you were learning for occupational reasons since these are a common padlock. It is a combination lock with the dials on the bottom. Its technically not lock picking and I can't discuss how to open them on here but it's good to research and know.
