I Can't Believe I Got This Home (Sort Of)

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

If this dial was previously pulled (which someone suggested it may have been due to the punch marks on the dial), I wonder if the spindle was inserted in the wrong position. I of course could be saying something that makes no sense but I thought the location of the drop in is dependent on where the spline in the spindle is relative to the dial.

Another dumb question, did the company that ended up with the Major Safe Company keep the old factory combinations? I'll do some research on my end and post if I have an update.

it just hit me.. when they pressed the dial back onto the spindle, they didnt put it on where it was originally, so it is off by a few numbers now.. dialing the test combinations might not work either if that's the case.

anyone following my logic? does what Im saying make sense?

You would think they would have changed the combo after pulling the dial (as long as they actually got the safe open) So that would reset the wheels and only the drive cam would be slightly off. That should not effect the combination.

Does anyone have experience with the $10 - $20 5.5mm tipped endoscopes available on EBay? I'm not where I'm near the safe but was thinking I could push the power cable through the hole into the safe and insert the lighted endoscope to see what I can see.

i'm not familiar with $10-$20 scope you speak of. is the scope rigid or flexible? what is the view angle-----forward, oblique, 30 degree, 70 degree ? if flexible and with enough length and with correct view angle and strong light source, you might luck out and find the change key hole through the sheet metal door cover and hope it isn't plugged. i can't go any further.

probably this sort of thing, I wonder how floppy or rigid the cable is... http://www.ebay.com/itm/262347092112 or this one that has mirrors and more adjustable looking cable http://www.ebay.com/itm/252303930824 and this one with adjustable brightness LEDs looks very promising: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEPQ_ZxbJ4Y

and I have PMed OP that we're approaching Advanced methods of opening, and won't be going into further detail into this thread.

Former owner just texted me and said she has the combination but wants to come over to my family's house to open the safe with me to make sure there is nothing inside that belongs to her former tenant (that was allegedly using the safe).

I won't be in the area until Wednesday and will keep you posted as to (a) whether the combination works, and (b) whether anything was inside.

Since you bought the safe with the contents, if there is anything of real value, you may want to negotiate a commission based on value.

Maybe that is heartless of me, but they obviously gave it up as a lost cause.
