Why does a Masterlock #1 seem harder to pick than a #3?

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Why does a Masterlock #1 seem harder to pick than a #3?

Postby silverfox17 » 26 Mar 2016 21:38

They're both 4 pin, no security pins, etc. but I have only been able to pick a #1 a couple of times, but I can always pick a #3 (tried this with a few #3s and a few #1s). I didn't think Master had much variance in their locks, especially in their base models which are basically the same (no security pins, etc). Any idea what they are doing differently between the two?

The one you can pick regularly may have more pick friendly bitting.

The cores are the same. So are the internals, though scaled a little bit for the larger sized lock.

Most likely it's something simple like over setting the first or second pin. Look at the key while you pick it. Yes this is cheating but it will give you a good idea of how you should be picking.

I'm sure if you picked a large number of new no. 3's and no. 1's you would cease to notice a difference.
