6th pin on a Schlage 5-pin cylinder?

Hi everyone,

I'm a little new, so I hope this isn't something super obvious. I was repinning a Schlage C core from an Abus 83CS/45, and decided to try to take the difficulty up by adding an extra pin. (Normally there are 5 pins in the lock, but there is a last hole that will align with the tip of a 5-pin key when you put a#8 key pin in it.). When I went to put a spring/spool into the bible, I realized the chamber goes all the way through, so no spring would stay in there. Is this just a way for Schlage to charge more for 6-pin cores, while making them the same way as the 5-pin cores? Is there a kit or another good way to seal off that hole that you have tried (it looks like I can slide a piece of metal in the groove)?

What kind of core is it? is it a kik core with the adapter? or is it an actual Abus core with the nice milled viewing window? I only ask cause I have both, one in a rock another in a standard 83.

If it's just a regular kik core, you can just slide a piece of metal in the top. Or tap it and give it a grub screw. Epoxy or solder it if you want it to be permanent. As for the abus Core with the nice milled window, I have no idea how the hole dosn't have and end, and there not be a hole in the other end of the bible.

A Schlage, Ilco or other cylinder will have the bible covered by a slide cover which covers all 6 pin chambers. You have the Abus cylinder which is keyed 5 but can be keyed 6. Because one option for rekeying these locks is through the window on the side of the cylinder they had to come up with a way to key to 6 pin without resorting to a plug follower, in other words how would you add a driver pin and spring. So they leave that chamber uncovered and include a driver, spring and small slice in cap. However if you lose that slide the spring will remain in place without it once it is in the padlock body.

Does he? He says he put a spring in it and that it came right out the other side. Sounds a lot like a kik to me.

Thanks for the quick replies. After reading your posts, I realized that the lock had come with a little pack with an extra spring/spool, that I had originally taken as spares rather than for the extra cylinder (my newbie colors show). Dug it up and found the shim/cover for the extra hole. From what you both described, it sounds like this must be the Abus cylinder.
