Having an old safe drilled

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Having an old safe drilled

Postby brims » 15 May 2016 17:17

I've inherited an old Star floor safe, we don't know the combination and there's no serial number sticker/plate on the door so we won't be able to get a locksmith to see if Amsec even has the default combination. So my question is, if I get a locksmith out to drill and open the safe, would the lock still be working afterwards? I don't want to use it as a safe because I don't want anything to do with a floor safe. I'd just like to mess around with the lock, see how it works.

Depends on what part they drill in order to open it. They might drill a hole and use a rigid scope to view the combination wheels line up while turning the dial, then use something called transferring to open it, or they might drill out the fence just to get the lock open, in which case it won't be usable afterwards unless you get a new fence/lever arm from someone's spare parts bucket as it isn't a part you can just buy at a hardware store.

Find a real safe and vault tech not just your corner locksmith who may occasionally work on safes. You don't want someone to spend 2 hours drilling 5 holes into the door before they manage to get it open.

price will be $300-$750 on average.

That company keeps coming up in other searches, and I understand Dean used to work at Amsec, I'll give them a call to get that safe open. Thanks.
