3 in one lock dry lube

I picked up some schlage dual cylinder dead bolts on craigslist so that i could start learning to work in the C keyway. I met the guy in a Walmart parking lot and when i got the locks they were very gummy and sticky. looked like someone had filled the lock with graphite and then filled it up with some sort of light oil, the result was of course a muddy mess.

Being that I was at Walmart already I decided to get some of my go to metal cleaner, brake cleaner. When I was in there I noticed a can of 3 in one dry lock lube. It seems to be a dry teflon lube in a volatile solvent. it was on sale for 3 dollars for a 2.5 ounce can so I picked one up. After blasting out the locks with the brake cleaner I gave them a good lube with the teflon spray and it worked wonders.

For people that do not want to look further than your local wal mart or hardware store for something that is not Water-Displacement 40th attempt(WD-40) this is a great option IMO.

Most of the dri-lube uses alcohol as the base and you don't even need to use brake cleaner, because the alcohol will clean it out

one of the reasons I like break cleaner is because of the force that it comes out of the can, it really blasts anything out. Im pretty new to lock picking / locks in general so maybe this isnt needed for locks, but i have built a lot of things and in most other applications i like the ability to blast things out

Most every lock you will find only has one way in and out. This makes the 'blasting' a dangerous thing, as it isn't
always easy to get to the inside to dig everything blasted in, back out again.

Very similar to using an air gun while machining on the metal lathe or milling machine. Sometimes it seems easier
but if those filings get blasted to a place they do not belong, it can cause trouble later

I shouldnt be suprised by something made by WD-40 but the dry lock lube isnt actually dry at all.
I noticed a bit of an oily residue on my pinning tray after using "dry" lube yesterday. So i looked at the MSDS sheet, and I found it does not have any PTFE in it at all. In fact it contains mineral oil so is not a dry lube at all.

So i was fooled by marketing and enough heptane that it didn't feel like a spray oil until it actually drys off.

Yeah I'm actually curious too. I could never justify spending $9.00+ for Assa's/Medeco's lube just to try it out. If you think it's worth it, let me know and I'll grab a few bottles.

As for Locksaver, IDN used to carry it (haven't had an account with them in a while though). They had it for half list. I bought a case of it a few years ago and I just ran out. I bought a case of Master's lubricant on sale and while it's good, it's no Locksaver.

what do you use?

I like Superlube, they make a teflon spray that is alcohol based and I also like their teflon grease.
They also make a spray lubricant that gets very sticky and makes a real mess, I make sure when I buy their
spray lube that the can says 'alcohol propellent'

The Medeco spray lube works great, but a tiny can costs too much

At those prices it may be cheaper to just throw that lock away & get another one
