Does anyone know what type of cam lock this is?

Postby LocksportSouth » 1 Jun 2016 12:58

Hey all,

So, I have a cheapie wafer cam lock that I'd like to replace with a more secure one. Only problem is, I'm having trouble figuring out what type of cam lock that this is, or if there's a special name for it. Here's some pics:

Here's a very similar one I found on eBay. Most cam locks that I've come up with though are the tubular / bar type (not sure of the proper name), like This Medeco and This Abloy or This EVVA.

Any tips as to what type of cam lock I have are greatly appreciated, as are suggestions of where to buy a high security* replacement.

Thanks in advance! :)

* Some ideas: Medeco (Any), EVVA MCS or 3KS, Abloy (Classic, Protec or Sentry), Keso, etc.

Oops, trying to edit my post but it seems I can't now. So, sorry for the double post. Mods, feel free to merge this with the OP.

I found This but the screw holes are in the wrong place - middle left and right rather than in all four corners like my existing one. D'oh! Do I have a non-standard lock or something?

Oh, I also thought that maybe I could just use the existing cam hole to fit a "normal" cam lock (like the ones linked) so I tested it with a spare tubular cam lock that I had and whilst it fits fine in the hole, it's much longer/deeper than the fairly close/tight one that's on there now so the drawer that it's on opens a pretty long way before the locking pole at the back of the lock cylinder catches on the inside, d'oh.

I don't remember the "official" name for this type of lock but I've heard different locksmiths refer to the ones with that kind of housing to be furniture locks, cabinet locks or drawer locks, rather than cam locks. I don't know if that'll help you narrow down your google searches or not.

I have a few bags of different ones laying around out in my old inventory, but just going off memory I don't think I have any just like that one. Perhaps it'll help one of us to direct you to a suitable replacement if you post measurements of the outer diameter of the square part of the lock, or the distance between centers of the screw holes. Also the length of the cylindrical part of the lock as they come in many different lengths for varying thicknesses of cabinet doors.

Ah, thanks :). Yeah, I found that Cabinet lock helped somewhat, unfortunately all the ones I found have holes in the wrong places (like the Abloy I linked).

Here's the specs:

The screw holes are about 4mm in diameter, ignoring the recessed bevel parts (just the open hole area)

The lock you have is a Chinese chep lock made for a company called Blum. To put something in more secure you will need to get creative, I don't know of a direct replacement that is high security.

Ahh ok, thanks for the tip! I was thinking about getting the Abloy one I linked to and drilling two holes into the plate on the drawer that it's on, and tapping them to take a couple of the small bolts. I guess it'll have to be something down that route - or just suck it up and live with the crappy one I guess!

Good to have a confirmation either way, thanks :)
