Your hobby?

Pull up a chair, grab a cold one, and talk about life as a locksmith. Trade stories of good and bad customers, general work day frustrations, any fun projects you worked on recently, or anything else you want to chat about with fellow locksmiths.

Your hobby?

So what else besides this industry do you regularly participate in?

Locks and keys and all that stuff are nice to make a living but you need to get away from the bench for awhile and do something else.

In my case, it has been a life long interest in radio - specifically ham radio, and short wave listening. I know radio is so old, but remember that smart phone you carry is a radio. SO is TV and anything else which uses a wireless connection to the outside.

So this is my shortwave side of the radio biz ...

That is a Zenith Trans-Oceanic D 7000 Y, the last of the Chicago TO's. i have had it since new, like 1975 and heard the world on it. There are way too many highlights to just count a few, but here is a couple, like the 1980 Moscow Olympics -- the US didn't go but we did via shortwave and have the QSL cards and other goodies from the event. Someplace around here we have a stuffed "Misha Bear" the symbol of the Moscow games, but i think the daughter waltzed off with it. (kids).

The fall of communism heard over R. Moscow -- the Tienanmen Square event of 89 over R. Peking. and tons of other cultural and political events heard live over the international radio.

If you are asking, I am a ham, and I normally use a Icom 7000 transceiver for that work. Have worked the world and have the QSL cards to prove it.

So what do you do besides work the locksmithing trade?

Just a note - the radio in this shot is on and tuned to China Radio International - 9580 KHz, 31 meter band. Local time - 20:00 hrs. (Chicago)

Part 2 -- after I posted the wife said why don't you show then what we got over the years ....

When you write reception reports and send them in, the station you sent it to will send you a QSL card, that shows they got it and you have proof of your listening. Here are a couple of shots of some of the goodies i got over the years.

First up is a general shot of a bunch of countries...

Image

Everything under the sun, from cards to QSL to pennants to flags to all kinds of interesting stuff, along with some interesting stamps. WRTH is the bible of radio broadcasting and lists every radio and TV station in the world. I have those and Passport to World Bend Radio, which is now discontinued.

Upper right is my book on Trans-Oceanics from 1941 thru the end, and I do have both a D7000Y and an R7000-2. That last was the last of the TO's. in the lower left is the original operators manual for my radio I use every day - the D7000Y ...

ALL? Never!

This collection is from Radio Moscow alone.

During the cold war we listened to the Commies quite a lot just to see what they had to say. AND they said a lot. Participated in many music contests and have the four records from them to prove that. Just some of the stuff - -note the Misha Bear card in the set from the 1980 Moscow Olympics, the stuffed bear looked like that - just got to get it back from my daughter.....

Currently still write to broadcasters and should have some interesting things coming from Radio Havana Cube on their 55th anniversary of being on the air.

I have a set like this from ham work, but for ham you need a license. This is what you can get over the years just from listening to radio, writing reception reports and as it was participating in radio.

Enjoy!

You may find some replies from smiths in this existing General Chatter Hobby thread: www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=59819 but feel free to keep this one for locksmiths only.

I like to write articles about locksmithing, life safety, access control, etc. for trade magazines. Tom Demont got me started on this years ago and I haven't looked back. It's fun to do a bit of research and plus it pays well. Trying to branch out and write for websites and consumer magazines.

I also like to make upgrades to my house. About to finish a "boutique-style" closet that my wife wanted. Should have finished it last week but Home Depot only sells cheap, plastic compasses/scribes now; had to order a metal one online. Started renovating our master bathroom too. Projects like that keep me plenty busy and broke.

Also enjoy listening to audiobooks, podcasts, and radio shows because I have about an hour long commute in and out of Atlanta 4 days a week. Usually have one of the 3 playing when I'm doing work around the house.

And on Sundays during NFL season, I'm either at the Georgia Dome or watching a Falcons road game. I don't know if this is a hobby but I sure as hell hope so considering how much money I spend on tickets each year.

Ham radio is also one of my hobbies. I think this was commented in the thread where I showed the radio and scanner mounted in my work van.

But my other hobby is BBQ. More specifically, smoking and competition BBQ. I am a Certified BBQ judge and love to go to competitions and eat (usually) great Q! As part of my BBQ hobby, I collect old Weber BBQ's.

In 2 weeks I get to combine both hobbies as I cook for the local Ham Radio club at the annual ARRL Field Day event!

This was last year as we were setting up. We have a 70' portable tower and run everything off grid for the weekend. I camp out the whole time and just have a blast. The RV on the left is mine and I built the cargo carrier, bike rack antenna mount seen.
