Something wrong with my lock?

Postby tomaspc » 20 Jun 2016 12:48

Hello guys, I'm new here. My name is Tomás and I'm brazilian

I'm a complete newbie when it comes to lockpicking but I've always found the act of lockpicking really cool, so I decided to buy a lockpicking set with a transparent practice padlock. I received the products today but I found something odd with the padlock.

As far as I can tell from all the videos I've watched, all locks I've seen have their keyhole parallel (aligned) with the pins (they're both vertical). The keyhole on my padlock however is perpendicular to the pins (90 degree angle between them), so I think it is practicly impossible to pick this kind of lock.

As I've already said, I'm a complete beginner, so any kind of feedback is appreciated!!

That is called a dimple lock. It is pickable but dimple pick set make it easier.

you have google in your country right? if not, I'll help you out:

regular lock pick lifts pins to a shear line and the pick shapes are pretty tall because they have lots of room in a vertical keyway, the picks look like these:

dimple lock pins rest in a much smaller space so the picks cannot insert and move up and down very far, so dimple picks slide in next to the pins and little flippers / flags are used to move the pins up by rotating the handle of the pick, this scoops the pins upwards.

if you do not want to go one pin by one pin scooping and lifting each pin one at a time, you can get dimple pick rakes, which look like a wave and eventually set the pins to the shear line as you rake them in and out of the lock quickly and they look like this:

or you can make your own dimple lock rakes like this member did:

his home made dimple rake picks:

Hope this helps
