Schlage question

Postby m1ttens » 25 Jun 2016 7:47

Perhaps it's for marketing purposes, but Schlage has a "B" series of deadbolts and then a "J" series of deadbolts. Both are sold at the big box hardware store. Aside from the ANSI rating, which really has nothing to do with actual security, what differences are there if any between the two? Price point was an obvious one to me, as well as cosmetic where the B series was smooth and the faceplate was one piece whereas the J series looked like the cylinder slipped into place?

Picking wise, a SC1 keyway is a SC1 keyway is a SC1 keyway, right? Doesn't matter what it sits in?

Thanks.

JD series is re-branded Dexter lock with SC1 keyway.

All of them?

Mechanical tolerance wise, is it as tight as the Schlage or is it sloppier?

Depends which Schlage. Commercial Schlage locks have a tighter tolerance than residential ones but lack security pins. Commercial add a 6th pin which adds a slight bit of security but allows a much larger keying matrix.

Thanks for the replies.

The one I'm working on is 5 pin so it's most likely residential with a 74653 bitting. The faceplate just says Schlage on it but I guess they didn't want to put "Dexter" on it because folks like me wouldn't know what that is.

Edit: definitely has security pins- getting very deep false sets.

It sounds like you got an answer already but there are other types of schlages that match the description you gave like the b250, b500, b600 series.
