Sparrow pry bars...

Postby Skyshot16 » 28 Jun 2016 10:42

Hi again I have just had a new set of sparrow pry bars turn up and they look and feel extremely fin for most locks which was a bit of a disappointment... I went for the sparrow pry bars because there is a uk seller that has most of the sparrow line.

Has any one used the sparrow pry bars? If so what locks do you use them on and also how do the fair against the Peterson pry bars?

In addition I would like to buy a set of Peterson pry bars could any one help me with the best ways of getting a set as I'm uk based?

I am in need of some pry bars also. Is there anyway to purchase a good set besides Peterson and Sparrows? There must be a another place.....or more manufactures.

Peterson from what I understand are the original pry bars, sparrows are about the same but a lot thinner and not sure why... There is also a brand called technical entry which if you like could be called the test tube baby of peterson and they are pretty much just clones of the pry bars.

I have the Sparrows pry bars and I don't use them because of how thin they are. I also have Peterson .05 and .04 which are incredible. They can be awkward because of the angle (sticking straight up) but they provide the most control and feedback. I hate using bottom of the keyway tension wrenches with flex after using the Peterson Pry Bars. Each lock has its own best tension tool though; the Peterson Pry Bars don't work for everything. They work for a lot though. I ordered some mad bob pry bars at the beginning of June which should hopefully ship soon, so I'm looking forward to trying them. I asked Sparrows why they are so thin and they told me they are releasing a thicker one soon, which is good news for future buyers I suppose. I haven't found a use yet, though, for the Sparrows pry bars yet. Maybe they will come in handy soon.

I ended up making my own. After getting myself a sparrows vorax pick set for Christmas last year I couldn't afford to spring for anything extra. I picked up few sturdy good quality stainless butter knives at a yard sale and cut the general shape with a cutoff wheel and filed the details down by hand. Over all it took about an hour for 2. One is made perfectly to fit most American locks and the other is a bit thinner for whatever else. They work very well. I also made a couple to custom fit the abus locks I have laying around. I hammered a crude one from an Allen key out in the field(literally). I was locked out of the tractors fuel tank and didn't have my picks with me.
