Made my first pick, what next?

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Made my first pick, what next?

Postby ClockworkLemon » 3 Jul 2016 6:03

So, I got bit by the lock picking bug again after a 20+ year break. I made a few picks back in high school when I first got interested in lock picking. I still have a couple of them somewhere, but I'm in no hurry to try and find them again, as they were pretty crudely made. After doing a bit of research, I had another go at making my own pick. Here's my handiwork:

Now comes the tricky question: I have a hook, and enough hacksaw blade to make one more pick, what should I make next? Some sort of rake, or a half-diamond, or something else? I'm thinking of either a city rake or a snake rake, but I'd be interested in what others thought too.

That came out very nice. I'd probably go with the snake-rake next, IMHO.

In my humble opinion there two picks that are a must have. A hook and a Bogota. So, I would say make a bogota.

Short hook , medium hook / gem style and a deforest diamond. 90% of the time that is all I use. BUT I'm terrible at raking.

If you are just getting back into picking, and want to make another pick, nice job on the hook by the way, the next one I would recommend is a regular classic shaped half diamond because it is much simpler to make and finish than the other suggestions. It is also a very useful pick as both a rake and a rocker.

Hope this helps,

Thanks for the replies, guys, I've got plenty of food for though here. I have to admit, the thought of something simple is appealing, gives me a chance to improve my technique a bit more before attempting something intricate. So, I'll probably make a half diamond for now, and try to get my hands on a couple more hacksaw blades.
