How can I figure out the code for this "the gym group" lock

Postby dogypioneer » 6 Jul 2016 6:53

So I bought one of these cheapo locks from a vending machine at my local gym (picture below) and on opening the lock out of its packaging the lock was set to 0000. I tried to change to lock to another combination by holding the lock down at a 90 degree angle to its locking position and then changing the combination. I think I royally f...ed up in changing the combination and somehow set it to some random code that I havn't a clue what it is. I can no longer lock the lock as it needs to have to right combination in it for it to lock and neither can I change the combination as it needs the correct combination to change it..... Most stupid lock design imo and a waste of money.

Anyhow now that the lock is permanently unlocked, is there a way that I can figure out the combination of the lock so that I can lock it? Im sure this sounds very backwards to a lot of you guys considering most people are trying to figure out the combination so that they can unlock a lock, not lock it!

The fact that you can't lock it without the combination is a good thing. Imagine locking it to the gym locker and then don't be able to open it again...

To answer to your question, I make a wild guess and say that one or more numbers you set is still zero instead of the number you set. Try to change one or more zero in the combo you set and see if it works. So if you set 1234 try 1230, 1200, 1204, 1034, 0234, 0034, 1004...

Good luck :)

If you turn the shackle away from both the locking position and the 'combo change position' are you able to shine a light down the locking position hole and see the gaps in the discs? I'm not familiar with how the combo change system works, but I imagine there will be at most 2 gaps the teeth can pass through, and knowing those positions would reduce the number of combinations greatly. Beware false cuts.

Almost guaranteed that lock has the feeler gauge vulnerability (I don't know if that's the actual name or if it even has a name, but it seems all cheapy wheel combination locks have it).

Use a feeler gauge to find and line up the notches in the wheels then just advance them all one number at at time till you have the combo.
