7 pin Schlage

I had an old schlage mortise sitting around unpicked so I decided to pick it. when I pulled out the cylinder I noticed that it has 7 places for pins not the 5 or 6 that I usually see. I cant find any 7 pin schlage keys out there so why would they make a 7 pin cylinder?

That gives a larger range of combinations for master key systems.

Where would I find a 7 pin key that would fit? I cant find one anywhere (Maybe my google-Fu sucks)

the only 7 pin Schlage blanks I have seen are control blanks, and the 7th cut is a fixed height of 6 (unless you were to cut it deeper)

Thanks for the info Jeff, I will pin it with the 6 and maybe see if I can get a 7th to ride the tip of the key (just to make it harder to pick.... I have some cool security pins I got from a European lock that was sent to me to try out..

Ok, I pinned it up as 8383836 and cut a key on the HPC1200.... Works like butter!!!
I will play with that for a while to learn the sequence and then I will add some security pins in to make it a real PITA.

You can make your own 7 pin key from a 6 pin blank, you just need to cut the shoulder and the millings back,
I actually hold the key so the cutter blade cuts the millings back, you hafta be careful, or goodbye fingernail!

You can order 7 pin Schlage C's. As mentioned above, they are typically used as a control key for Schlage SFIC. Part number is 35-056-C.

Just for the sake of adding to this madness, I had to rekey some locks on a relatively new building last week. They were Yale, LFIC cores. Half were 6-pin cores and half were 7-pin cores. I had to order some 7-pin control blanks and still cut the shoulder back to make the 8th-pin control space. This architect/contractor went crazy when he ordered these.

And yes, these are commonly available but probably would be a special order from your usual supplier.
