Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Find change key tool and changing index for safe

Postby trajan2 » 10 Jul 2016 8:46

Hey guys,

I have this old combination lock at home. I was not even able to find a name on the safe but at least I am able to open it because the combination is a default one. Yet, I would like to change the code it but I have two problems:

* I don't know what *combination change key* tool to buy. Are there standard ones that I could try or buy something like the multi tool shown here: [Youtube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P14iJUWgK2Y?) Where can I order it online (Of course it would be good to know the name of the safe...)
* There is only one opening index in the middle which works fine. But there is no changing index as it can be seen in the pictures. But the opening index is actually not just one but three lines. Does that mean that the changing index is the same as the opening one or does it work differently altogether?

Any help is appreciated. [image][/image]

The change key will be the standard change key for a Sargent & Greenleaf (S&G) safe lock. With your safe door unlocked and open, look at that change key hole. Now, while keeping your safe door open, turn the dial just enough to extend the bolt (lock the door).

At the point where the bolt is finally is fully extended, can you see squares in the middle of the change key hole? If so, the normal opening index on the dial ring is also the change key index, and you are ready to use the change key.

If nor, then while leaving the safe door open and locked, you may need a little simple math. Take your combination and subtract 8 1/2 numbers from each number. For example, we will use 10-30-20 for a combination. If you subtract 8.5 numbers from each, you will end up with the new combination of 1.5-21.5-11.5 Dial that number in to the opening index. (Do not turn the dial to open. Just stop dialing when the combination is entered. Do you see squares in the change key hole? If so, you are now ready for the change key.

This postwill tell you the parts of your safe lock, and if you read it, it will also tell you how to line up the wheels for the change key if you don't know/can't figure out the change index,

Good luck, and tell us how it goes! :D

I suspect the lock was originally a hand change safe lock and the dial wasn't changed when the key change lock was installed.

Wow, thank you for such a quick response.

So the picture of the keyhole I posted above is basically the situation when the safe is unlocked but the bolt fully extended. So the "squares" are not in the center but I guess somewhat shifted to the right (when looking from the inside at the lock). So as Gordon explained, I will assume that the change index is 8.5 numbers left (counter clockwise) to the opening dial.

I can't try now because I don't have the change key yet. The keyhole's bottom two longer sides have a length of about 3cm, the top side a length of about 2cm. I assume that it will be a S&G U8 change key then, is that correct? (https://www.amazon.com/SARGENT-GREENLEA ... B01ASVVIJ2). I will buy that at some point and then come back :)

Thank you for all the help!

Are you in the US? Try ebay for a better price than Amazon.

Also, you can unscrew the green cover plate so you can see the lock better.

How many numbers are there in your existing combination number, it is more likely to be a three wheel lock, but if the lock has been changed from a non original one as would be suggested by the 0 or non key change dial and ring, then I suppose there is a slim chance that a 4 wheel lock could have been fitted.

He says he has the combination to open the lock, so who knows. I have replaced dials/dial rings using dial rings that had no index mark. (see the above linked post). I just filed one on.

Ok, Thank you all, it worked.

So the shipping took forever, I had to internationally send it from US ebay to Germany but the tool finally arrived today. So this change key tool worked. The only adaptation that I had to make was that my safe indeed doesn't have a "changing index" but the opening index works as both and I was able to set my new 3-number combination.

All the best
