Peterson Hook 1 vs. Peterson's Gem

Postby pensarepink » 12 Jul 2016 11:02

I've been working with a Peterson gem for a while and find it's my favorite pic. I can get into almost everything I want to SPP with it. I was wondering about the difference between their hook 1 and the gem. Do I need both? I was considering investing in the hook 1 but I don't want to spend unnecessary money.

Looking at the website the hook 1 looks like it has a longer upwards curve to it but it's hard to compare the two on the site.

Thanks for any info!

Here are some images - 15 thou gem, gem, hook 1

Reason: changed old [IMG] tags to new [IMAGE] tags which auto-resize huge pics. the original pic is 4032 × 3024 pixels. Sweet pic!, jus a lil too big for the forum. Thanks.

If you don't want to spend unnecessary money, I would wait to get it. Paying shipping for a single pick doesn't seem like a good idea to me.

the hook1 has it's uses as does the gem. The only differences I've noticed is the gem has a little more reach and you have to be a little more precise on the placement. If you don't need anything else I would just wait. It is a great tool to have though.

Squelchtone: Thanks for fixing the image code - I didn't realize that it would display so big.

I find the 15 thou gem works for most things. There are situations where the thicker picks work better like setting spools on locks with open keyways, but the thinner picks work if you're not having to lift too hard. The rubber handled picks are nice, but the less expensive plastic handled ones work well too. I can't recall any time where I had to switch to the hook to get a lock open.

The Gem is basically a hybrid of a hook and diamond. It doesn't place pins as easily as a plain hook does, but it does allow you to use a scrubbing motion when you're close and want to wiggle the pin into place. But there are times where you're better off with control a hook will give you

I'd also advise against buying individual picks. Peterson has a large assortment of EDC kits, there's bound to be one that covers most of what you'll want for picks. Don't get fixated on buying Peterson either, they are good, but they aren't world changing. My first Peterson's were only purchased after about 4 years with other picks. I like them, but for the money I got more value out of Sparrows
