What can you tell me about this safe

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

I've been in email contact with this guy and he is willing to come down some on the price .. I have seen some other Herring's that are similar but not exact going for up to $800..

That dial doesn't go with the handle, I think it has been drilled open previously
Do you really think it is worth that much unopened?

he is willing to come down on the price .. and if the lock can be manipulated I put in the dial time .. If it needs to be drilled I will need to do some more research ..

I'm not really sure.. My initial thought was 400 if he delivered it .. It was hoping to get some more info before I made any official offers

Found a bit of history here: en.allexperts.com/q/Antique-Safes-3774/2010/4/HERRING-p-t-safe.htm Silas Herring produced this style from 1844 to 1869 when name of company was changed.

The dial is a replacement and could possibly be a S&G; can't see center of dial clearly enough. One spot in the paint may be a mark where safe has been drilled

The picture is small but it does look like the safe .. Refurb of course.. Sad to see it is only a document safe .. If it is an S&G shouldnt be too hard to open ..

Any idea what a good price is for it ??

Not to dodge your query on value, but the price of an old safe comes down to what the buyer is willing to pay. Go to ebay and search Mosler safe and antique safe (these tend to pull all the listings) and note the prices--ignore the dreamers and follow the realistic listings. What other listings have been on C/L in your area? Older safes seem more available in some areas than others. Based on what I have seen offered and sold in this area; , seller needs to bargain on his price--- a lot. I passed on a small cannonball style last week at $400 that was open, working, and a horrible repaint

It's missing the plaque, the decoration, and the original lock, I wouldn't bother with a resto if it was me. The interior is probably in just as good of shape...
