Stupid things you did when you were new or got new gear

Lets post fome funny stories of the stupid things we did cutting keys or assembling locks as the result of either being new to the trade or as the result of getting a new piece of euipment that you did not read the instructions to.

I'll start:
The first key duplicate I cut did not enter the keyway, and then i realized that i cut it on the wrong side on the blank.

It should have still entered the keyway, since as far as the pins are concerned, it would be a blank. But have seen the wrong side of a key cut before. Even sent someone a key cut on the wrong side as a gag.

When taking apart my first U-Change lock, I wanted to take apart the key pin assembly so I could see how it worked. The key pin assemblies have springs inside them, and they can launch the top part of the key pin assembly a loooooong way. I can assure you that those top parts of the key pin assemblies can play a really, really, really good game of hide-and-seek. Luckily, we have tile in most of our house, or never would have found it. As it was, it went from the living room, down the hall, and into the front of one of the bathrooms. I'd estimate it traveled 15 meters from where it launched. Found the spring about 2 meters from where it launched. I spent an hour pulling off couch cushions and moving furniture around before I worked my way down the hall with a flashlight held near the floor to highlight anything on the floor, but I did find the key pin part.

So I recommend that if you want to take apart the key pin assemblies from a U-Change, do it inside a small bag.

Sadly, I can't say I've only done this when I was new. I still do it.

Pull a KIK out of the box, dump out the six bottom pins. Put in the new five bottom pins to match the key bitting - and you know what's coming next .... Insert plug back into the cylinder, turn the plug to the locked position, "wait, what was that snapping noise?" Oh ya, that would be the sixth top pin. Sigh ....

Put the plug back into an Almont with one of the key pins missing.

Not if you are trying to put it in upside down.

I'll hafta go a long ways back to get to the beginning, but I remember when I was about 7 years old, my Dad let me go
on a lock call with him and this was the first time he let me do something more than just get out of the truck, to open
and close the gate. He told me he had cut the first key too low and he wanted me to make several copies of the key,
but he gave me the top from an invoice and told me to place the paper under the key. I promptly put the paper (shim)
under each key copy, that I cut, which made them all even lower than his first 'too low' key was. I got to hear the familiar
GD it Billy, You cut them all too low!! Turned out I had also just used up the last of those key blanks that he had with him as well,
he had to take the lock apart and replace the top pins with beveled kwikset #1 bottom pins, so the keys would work. Of course
this was back in the 70's, back then he was using schlage bottom pins, and filing things to fit, if they were off.

I'm sure all you key cutters know that I should have placed the paper (shim) under the key to be duplicated, that would have raised the cuts on the copied keys...

That's it, Casper.

More like trying to hold top pins in with a stupid wire. And a design, like Gordon brought up, where if something goes wrong, you've pretty much just made a paperweight,
