E-Bay is like a box of chocolates

E-Bay is like a box of chocolates

You never know what you are going to get.

Okay, let's start this with my last post and go from there. I had been looking for a new or should i say new to me typewriter. in the end I bought bunch of them. YUP a whole bunch -- and here is what I got so far....

Corsair 700 - Gold in color, is SCM Pica 12, 10 mono-spacing, power shift, works like a dream. Black & Red ribbon.

Corsair Cougar - Blue & Cream. IS SCM Spencerian Script. 12 point type, 10 mono-spacing. Looks super on paper just like writing.

Corsair Deluxe - Medium blue, is SCM Elite 10, and 12 mono-spacing. This is a close spaced, and smaller sized type, remember - pica is usually 12 point, and elite is 10 point type. Works great after some work.

Super G - The is "racing blue" with Ghia stripes on it. This unit is SCM pica 18, which is semi bold and wide spaced. 10 mono-spacing.

Forecast 12 - This is a SCM machine made for Sears. This one is really special, it has Italic 12 point type in it. 10 mono-spacing.

Royal Safari II - This is another script machine totally different from the Cougar - this one looks like small writing, I guess Elite 10 point, my guess. I haven't measured it yet.

AND so far along with a junker I picked up for parts -- I guess I spent somewhere around 300 bux on all these. All work to some extent before the cleaning and oil job - now work like new.

Ribbon have been a problem. I bought several of these odd ball 1 1/2 spooled ribbons off the net, all were as dry as the Sahara. AND don't think you can buy a 2 inch ribbon and respool these - there is too much ribbon on a full sized spool to fit into the machine, and you do not have a "rivet punch" to add a reversing rivet to a ribbon you cut off to suit. Sent all back with a sharp complaint.

Photos and type displays later.

Reading thru this, I suppose I should explain the terms -- normally typewriters have either pica, standard, or elite, about 1/4 of them. Now mono-spacing is the "gap" between letter as determined by the escapement assembly. Normally you put pica 12 point type in a 10 spacing machine, and this is 10 characters.per inch. With elite, 10 point type you have 12 mono-spacing, or 12 characters per inch. There are of course other type styles and spacing s from 6 mono, to 24 mono, which is ant dropping size type. Usually used for prescriptions.

Ribbons come in several sizes as well, Normally there is the "universal" 2 inch spool which should fit most machines, it has a removable center which can be "adjusted" by popping out parts of it to match your machine. Then there are the late SCM machines which use a 1 1/2" spool. normally this takes about 10 yards of ribbon v/s 14 yards or so on a 2 inch spool. Ribbons come in all black, usually - or the "original" black and red. I also have ribbons in all blue, green, purple, and pink. All in 2 inch spools. At one time they also made a blue - green ribbon much like the black - red type. AND ages ago, no longer made was a four color ribbon - black - red on one half, and blue - green on the other half. No longer made.

Just some typewriter notes for you! Trust me, there is nothing more fun than sitting down and pounding out your message on real paper and with type as you are working your way thru it. Simply love the experience! Yes, I do have a word processor as well - you are looking at it now. SO? Too modern. too much no fun. It tries to correct not only missed spellings but grammar as well. I hate that! Nobody like the "word substitute" that correct word inserts. 2) They won't let you use profanity either. much like this program, I had a different word in part of this and it just voided it, so I had to go back and use something else. Nightmares!

I have been using some ribbons I bought years ago on some really large spools, I just wind them on the spools of my old
typewriter. I don't let the lack of a 'reversing rivet' bother me, I just use my eyes, to see when the ribbon needs to be reversed
and then I flip the switch myself. I usually buy manual typewriters at thrift stores, paying freight off E-Bay doesn't appeal to me.

I have found the Remington typewriters hold up for me pretty well, seems like their guns do as well

I don't actually have any Remington guns, they just aren't very tactical
