Locks in Dominican Republic

Postby femurat » 23 Aug 2016 8:12

I've been on holidays in the Dominican republic and had a lot of fun. I took some pictures to lock related stuff and also got a souvenir.

First of all, here is my souvenir, that I personally took off a safe that was going trashed, with two non working keys.

Here is a strange lock for an electric box outside a house. THere were many different models, but this one caught my attention since there's no keyway.

I went to a hardware store and found some locks, but nothing interesting or made locally.

I also visited the house of Cristoforo Colombo son, located in Santo Domingo city.

Image

It was full of decorated safes, lockable boxes and cabinets.

The box on the right has an amazing locking mechanism, with a dozen of bolts moved at once by the key

The box at the bottom of the bed was made of elephant leather and steel

Doors and windows here have bars all around them, and more than one lock.

And here is a saint out of a church, I guess he's St. Peter with the Paradise keys.

Cheers :)

PS: since we are here, anybody knows what those strange pipes are? Just the bigger bus had them. I've never seen something like those.

Since I don't see any valve stems on the wheels, I would guess those are airlines that automatically keep the tire pressure at a set number.

Aside from that, thanks for the awesome pictures! I'm envious of your adventure for sure.

your little souvenir lock, you may be able to set it to work on one of those keys by loosening the allen bolt and adjusting the levers to suit one of the keys.

That is why he has ordered an imperial size Allen wrench set. ;)

Silverado, you may be right. Being attached to the wheels those pipes may be for the brakes or tire pressure.

safecracker33, as Gordon said, I know that. Your comment may be useful for others in the future so thanks for pointing that out.

Cheers :)

I've just found a video on how the old system that allows a vehicle to self regulating the air pressure works, between 6' and 7' 20'' there's the "kinematic valve" installation, interesting.

The second picture looks like a lock used by the utility companies to lock meters here in the United States. Did you get a chance to look closely at that lock?

The utility company locks require a tool, rather than a key, to open.

I couldn't inspect it because the house owner was around and I didn't want to look suspicious. I just discretely took the 3 pictures.
From what I saw the "keyhole" was just a very shallow round hole, with some black plastic on the bottom.
Good chances it actually is a generic "utility lock" like you say.

Cheers :)
