Will a pick set pick all locks? wafer? warded?

Postby jaime_lion » 1 Sep 2016 8:39

So I am looking at getting a lock pick set and I was wondering would a standard lock pick set pick locks that are wafer or warded locks? on sparrows website they sell warded picks and wafer pick sets do these lock picks just make getting into those locks easier? I am going to be getting the tuxedo set from sparrows.

Thanks

Different types of picks for different types of locks. A sparrows Tuxedo probably won't tackle a warded lock since the picks in that set aren't made for that. I think the Tuxedo has a half-ball or ball variant, which will be your go-to for wafer locks.

You can actually pick warded locks with a hook. The pass key set is a lot easier.

Interesting! I've never tried due to thinking it wouldn't work out the way I wanted it to. Maybe I'll have to try just because.

When I was starting out .. I bought a small 10-12 piece set suitable for Pin Tumblers and over time I have added various picks/Tension tools to my collection.. i.e. just bought some I-Core Tools.. Saved me from spreading a lot of money on tools I don't need or use.. Usually when you buy a big set you end up with tools you will never touch ..
When I finally leave this world.. Will someone please tell my wife what I have REALLY spent on locks ...

A set of the warded picks will work on warded laminated padlocks. They will not necessarily work on the old mortise warded locks or on any warded locks that use a barrel key (like what might be on a piece of old furniture).

Do not forget level tumber locks, a hook pick works, but one needs a special wrench. There are some very impressive picks made for lever tumbler safe locks (lever tumbler safes seem to be more popular in Europe) where the pick and the wrench are all in one unit.

Why do you need a pick set that will pick all locks?

It was not in.my budget, but that is what I wanted when I was looking. If you are getting tools, might as well get all you will need when possible...

Some locks will require you to make your own tools. Have had to do that numerous times for unusual locks. And I'm not a skilled toolmaker.
